During a Firefly excursion last night, we came across this Box Turtle digging a nest to lay her eggs.
Female Box Turtles may travel up to about a mile to find the perfect nesting spot. The perfect spot will be in direct sunlight, in well drained sandy soil near the edge of protective cover. Her eggs will be deposited into a flask shaped nest, which she digs with her back legs (as seen in the photos). The eggs will hatch in the earth covered nest in late Summer or early Fall. The hatchlings will remain in the earth covered nest, living off of their internal yolk sac, until they emerge from the covered nest the following Spring.
