For the past several months, the Sports Legends of Delaware County Museum and Delaware County Historical Society have been saluting prominent Delaware County athletes who served in the military and brought national recognition to Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The first four exhibits showcased athletes who served during the Civil War, World War I, World War II, and the Korean War, respectively.

Now, for the fifth exhibit in the series, Vietnam veterans Bill Carpenter (football), Ed Dougherty (golf), John Cartwright(football), Bo Ryan (basketball), and Howard Starks(football) will be honored for their service during the Vietnam War era. Each of these Delco sports legends established a lasting legacy of courage, sacrifice, and character while serving his country.

The Vietnam Veterans Exhibit is expected to run from March 10, 2026 to April 14, 2026, and will be free to the public. Support has been provided by the Historical Society’s Steve Burman Exhibition Fund. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Visitors are instructed to ring the bell if the door is locked. The Delco Historical Society and Research Center is located at 9 West Front Street, Media, Pennsylvania, 19063. Cleats, skates, high-tops—when it comes to sports, perhaps no piece of gear is more important to an athlete than their footwear. Sports Legends of Delaware County Museum will be hosting an exhibit in May that features local Delco athletes’ personal tournament-worn athletic shoes. Dr. Eddie Coyle's Olympic Gold Medal winning weight lifting shoes ,compliments of Ed, are sure to be included in this most unique exposition. It’s that time of the year again, when the Sports Legends of Delaware County Museum presents their annual Book Signing event. So, if you are looking for that perfect stocking stuffer for that special person on your holiday gift list, the Sports Legends of Delaware County Museum is the place you want to be on Sunday December 14, 2025 from 12:00 noon to 2:00 pm. www.delcosportsmuseum.org

The museum is in the Radnor Township Municipal Building at 301 Iven Ave., Wayne, Pa. That day, outstanding Delaware County authors Rich Pagano and Jack Lemon will have copies of their books available to purchase and be signed.

Big ‘Em’ and the Legends of Chester Basketball is the third book written by Media High graduate Jack Lemon. In his previous books, Lemon wrote about the African American athlete at Media High and Media’s Olympian Ted Meredith. In his new book, Lemon does extensive research into one of the best players to ever set foot on a basketball court in Delaware County, Emerson Baynard. The legend known as the Big Em is thoroughly researched along with other legendary players from Chester, one of the best high school basketball programs in the state of Pennsylvania.

Rich Pagano, who has been writing a sports history column for local Delaware County newspapers for over 35 years, has authored The Baron of Leiperville: The Life and Times of James F. Dougherty Dougherty, also known as the “Baron of Leiperville”, was a larger-than-life sportsman whose hotel, bar, and fight arena in Leiperville, Pennsylvania, was a mecca for boxing from 1916 to 1947. During that time, he was the owner of one of the busiest fight camps in the country

Pagano brings back this fantastic era in this thoroughly researched and very interesting account of those exciting times in America. Also available will be the second printing of his Delaware County Sports Legends Book.
