About 15 years ago there was a relatively seismic shift in fitness as CrossFit gyms began popping all over while simultaneously there was research coming out showing the benefits of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). The average gym goer who would traditionally work down a row of selectorized machines for 3 sets of 10 and finish up with 30 minutes on a cardio machine were now doing Olympic barbell lifts, jumping on boxes and doing burpees until they verged on vomiting.

A recent study has now questioned whether this hybrid, or what is called concurrent training, is as effective as separating your strength and cardio training. The sexy headline is that the participants who did this separation in their training gained fitness twice as fast as the combined/hybrid training group.

"Eighty percent of success is showing up” - Woody Allen

If you are like me, you love to push yourself and train hard.

Sometimes, unfortunately, to our own detriment.

Constantly working on the “edge” can lead to an increase in injuries and burnout and will ultimately sabotage our success.

A recent study of elite track and field athletes showed that the likelihood of achieving a performance goal increased by 7-times in those that completed >80% of planned training weeks and training availability accounted for 86% of successful seasons.

Just keep showing up.

How long are your telomeres?

Wait. What the hell is a telomere???

Telomeres cap the ends of our chromosomes. The length of telomeres is highly related to chronological age. As people age, their telomeres become shorter, and shorter telomeres put people at a greater risk of premature disease and death. A healthy lifestyle tends to preserve telomeres, whereas unhealthy practices cause increased biological aging and shorter telomeres.

A recent study of over 4000 adults showed that regular strength training was strongly related to longer telomeres and less biological aging – As little as 90 min per week of strength training was associated with 3.9 years less biological aging on average

You can’t compare the injuries of pro athletes to “Weekend Warrior” injuries even if it the same diagnosis or sounds the same. The mechanisms and reasons for their cause are very different.

Pro athletes:
-Millions of dollars and career on the line
-Insane media and public pressure
-Produce and have to absorb a LOT of force
-Grueling schedule and travel

Weekend Warriors:
-Minimal and/or poor preparation
-Stiffness due to prolonged sitting
-Often skip warmups
-Lack of hydration, nutrition, sleep

That doesn’t mean you have to settle as you get older. Ditch the fear and expectation of injuries. Have a plan. Not sure how? Let’s talk.

A little thought exercise for your Sunday...

Imagine you're sitting down for a conversation with your 80 year old self. What do you think that older version of you what tell you that they wish they did more of?

I'll give you a hint - The answer will NOT be more Netflix and scrolling social media

Now, if you asked them what they wish they had more of, what do you think they would tell you?

Another hint - Time and health (NOT things and toys)

The best part of the second answer is that you can give it to them. What you do right NOW sets the stage for what your health will be in the decades to come, and more research is continually coming out about the impact of positive lifestyle choices not only prolonging life, but enhancing the quality of those years.

In his great new book The 5 Types of Wealth, author Sahil Bloom talks about our physical wealth and does a similar visualization to above where he asks you to imagine your 80th birthday party and your favorite song comes on - Do you get up and dance? Can you if you even wanted to?

Where do you start to build that health that will shape your later years?

It may begin with focusing on improving the consistency, quality and duration of your sleep
or...improving your mobility and movement quality
or...building more robust strength and fitness
or...managing stress better and better prioritization
or...improving the quality of your food choices
or...a little bit of each

Some scary stats on Diabetes:

One in 10 people in the United States and more than 830 million people worldwide have the disease—91 percent of them with type 2 diabetes; which, unlike type 1 diabetes, tends to develop in adulthood. About a third of Americans also have prediabetes—though more than 80 percent of them don't know they have it

BUT...there is good news!

It's not a pill, a shot or magic "hack" either.

Researchers from multiple top universities have shown that modest weight reduction, reduced stress, a healthier diet, and more physical activity can can all work to restore normal function of the body’s organs and tissues and reverse the metabolic abnormalities that are the primary drivers for the disease. To read more about this, check out this recent article in National Geographic magazine.

These are all very controllable factors with the right mindset, program and daily habits. And to go a step further, this can also likely extend to other pathologies beyond just diabetes as more and more discussion has been focused on metabolic dysfunction being at the root of many diseases. Obviously there a multiple factors involved in the development in any disease, including things we unfortunately cannot control, such as genetic predisposition.

The first step to putting the odds in your favor is taking ownership of what you DO control.

Manage stress.
Build muscle.
Lose body fat.
Get aerobically fit.
Eat nutrient-dense, whole quality foods.
Get proper sleep.

Your life depends on it.
