◦We do not train athletes to become bodybuilders, powerlifters or Olympic style weightlifters; rather, we train athletes to become better athletes. We train athletes to develop the components of athleticism; strength, power, flexibility, speed, agility, footwork, endurance, metabolic condition, body composition, mental focus and motivation. ◦We utilize the principle of specificity, and therefore use free weight training as much as possible. Free weights allow athletes to move athletically, and not in a fixed motion pattern like most machines. We train movements and thereby train the muscles that produce these movements.
◦We utilize explosive power training (plyometrics, split sn**ch, power shrugs, split cleans, presses, jerks, and power squats). Athletes with great power and explosiveness, for the most part, dominate athletics. With all other things being equal, the athlete with the greatest power and explosiveness will dominate his opponent. We follow a sequential progression, in order to maximize safety and optimize success, for all explosive power movements.

a GARAGE GORILLA training in THE HOLE (what the garage gym I trained in was called in NJ in the 70s)

Even though I own a gym, I have a small gym in my garage. I have always had a garage gym since 1972. WHY? I often train with my son and due to his schedule as an athlete,Coach and educator( We also throw together at a park near our house) and can easily get in a workout in after throwing rather than drive for 30 minutes. , so we train at the house. The gym is also convenient to me when my schedule requires me to travel. Many 3AM and 4 AM workouts or workouts during snow storms. It is not perfect but works for me allowing me to be a gym owner, husband, Dad and BIG POP POP!

There was a point in my training where I had a system that worked.

It worked great.

So I kept running it.

And running it.

Right past the point where it stopped working.

I wasn’t training for where I was.

I was training for where I used to be.

That’s fighting the last war.

Military strategists use that phrase to describe generals who prepare for the battle they have already won rather than the one in front of them.

Lifters do it constantly.

Running the same plan that built your base at 25 When you’re 38, and your recovery looks completely different.

Grinding the same progression that got you to 405, when 405 stopped being the problem two years ago.

Chasing the same bodyweight that felt right a decade back
without asking if it’s right now.

We all do it.

We get attached to the training version that gave us our best results, and we defend it as if it still applies.

The problem isn’t loyalty to what worked.

The problem is refusing to look at what’s actually in front of you.

The game changed.

Your body changed.

The demands changed.

The only thing that didn’t change is your program.

The lifters who last aren’t the ones who found the perfect system.

They’re the ones who keep asking whether the system still fits.

Look at your training right now.

Are you building for where you are?

Or… are you still fighting the last war?
