Hatteras Island Surf and Sail (Barton's Shop) Started in 1971 & now have 2 locations offering surf, windsurf, kiting, kayaking & paddleboarding. B Barton first started the shop when he was 17 in 1971.

He came to Hatteras with a couple hundred bucks, a painted van, and a couple surfboards. 40 years later Barton is still running the shop in Hatteras, only we do more than just surfing. A couple years after starting the shop, we picked up windsurfing for when the surf wasn't good. After windsurfing for a while, we opened the Sail shop in 95 which provided easier access to the sound for renting kaya

ks and windsurfing equipment. Then we suffered through the early days of kiting, learning on foils, c-quads, and 2 line kites. Today we use the sail shop for all our sailing, windsurfing, kiteboarding, paddleboarding, & kayaking needs, & it’s located on lela court right behind the Dairy Queen in Waves, NC. For your surfing, skim boarding & boogie boarding needs, visit the Surf Shop, located at 25410 NC Highway 12 right off the highway on the sound side just north of Hatteras Reality. Both sites offer lessons & rentals, as well as a wide variety of gear: Cabrinha, AIRUSH, Maui Sails, Chinook, Starboard, GSI surfboards, Dakine, Body glove, Prolimit, Neilpryde.

In honor of hurricane season. Sailshop 1999 during Floyd. Reider doesn’t have much memory from that day but Barton described Reider and Velas reaction to it all as if they were seeing Atlantis. “There was enough current in the water that the path from our house to highway 12 turned into a little Disney ride with the kayaks” Barton also mentioned that Floyd “wasn’t even close to the worst”… First photo is the SW side of the Sailshop mid storm.

Windsurfing Contest 1996-2003 Kitesurfing Contest 2001-2005. “One time the windsurfing wave comp was so big the only place we could get out at was the jetty at the lighthouse and for the amateur competition they’d judge the riders based on how far offshore they could get out. Most would just get washed right back in.” -Barton

“Originally the building started as a general store in the 1920s. A post office got added to it in the late 50s and ended up being moved in the mid 60s. So the building was vacant for about 6 years before we came across it. For a whopping $30 a month Wyche Ross and I started renting the building an started the shop. Coolest part was the building still had groceries when we moved in” - Barton
