Local Wrestling Programs to Meet in First Annual Valley Border Brawl
Northeast Bradford, Sayre, Tioga and Waverly square off on Dec. 21 at Waverly High
WAVERLY, N.Y.; October 22, 2013 – Four local wrestling programs will convene on Waverly High School on Dec. 21, 2013, for the First Annual Valley Border Brawl. Northeast Bradford and Sayre will represent Pennsylvania, while Tioga and Waverly will
represent New York. The event will begin with a “warm-up” clinic instructed by Cornell assistant coach Mike Grey. VBB will feature a total of eight dual meets, including four high school sanctioned competition dates. Each respective youth program will also participate in a pair of dual meets, as well as in Grey’s clinic, which opens the event at 9 a.m. The youth dual meets will be limited to 10 matches each and for experience only. Event director Brett Owen says VBB will fill a void in the local wrestling community. The quad-meet will showcase and promote the nearby programs in a singular event. It also will provide a unique competition experience for the student-athletes. Owen hopes it will help grow the community’s interest in the sport.
“It’ll be great to see how the varsity teams stack up against each other and to have the entire community come out and support it,” he said. “At the same time, it’ll be an invaluable experience for the young wrestlers. Where else do the little guys get to wrestle alongside the older guys? This will give them that opportunity.”
Owen is also excited to welcome Grey to the area. A two-time NCAA Division I All-American for the Big Red, Grey is entering his third season as coach. Owen says Grey will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the pre-event warm-up.
“The kids will love Mike,” said Owen. “He’s been around the sport forever and has competed at the highest level. I’m looking forward to his contributions and what he’ll teach our youth programs.”
Co-sponsored by Owen Insurance Agency, LLC and Dr. Patrick Owen, there will be no cost to the four teams participating. Color-coordinated T-shirts for each school will be sold in advance of the event. All proceeds will be split between Waverly Rotary Club and Sayre Elks Club.
