Ice Fishing FAQs ahead of Free Fishing Weekend (Jan. 17-18):
How safe is the ice?
Ice is never 100% safe. Conditions can change often and differ per waterbody. The DNR does not monitor ice conditions. Check with area bait shops or outfitters for local conditions.
What kind of gear do I need?
Basic ice fishing equipment may be available to use for free through the DNR’s fishing equipment for loan program. Ice augers (hand, drill-powered or gas/electric) are used to drill through ice. Existing holes can often be reopened with a chisel or spud bar.
For tackle, ice fishing typically involves jigging and set-lines like tip-ups. Small jigs, spoons and live bait such as wax worms or minnows are effective. Three hooks, baits or lures may be used by each licensed angler at one time to maximize your chances while out on the ice. Carry pliers for hook removal and a ruler to check if a fish meets the legal-size requirements to keep.
What might I catch?
Figuring this out is part of the fun, as fish species vary lake to lake. Commonly targeted species through the ice include bluegill, crappie, perch, walleye, bass and northern pike.
What are the regulations and license requirements?
During Winter Free Fishing Weekend, residents and nonresidents may fish most state waters without purchasing a fishing license, trout stamp or salmon stamp. Outside of Free Fishing Weekend, anglers who are 16 years old or older need a fishing license to fish in any waters of the state. Fishing licenses are sold online through Go Wild and at more than 1,000 license agents across the state. A driver’s license or social security number is required to purchase a license.
The 2025-2026 hook and line fishing and trout season regulations apply at all times and are available online and in print in English, Spanish, Hmong and large print versions.
