One of our favorite events at Clay Fest is returning...Raku Firing with Sam Frey! Below are tentative times of when each firing will take place. We recommend that you arrive one hour before the tentative Raku Demo Times to pick your pot and glaze your piece. Pick-up times are roughly one hour after your piece comes out of the kiln! You will receive a sticker to remind you to pick up your pieces before you leave.

Clay Fest 2026 Raku Firing Artist --- Sam Frey | Rome Around Acres Pottery

Sam Frey is a ceramic artist that focuses on groovy shapes and earthy colors. Art has always had a hold on Sam, she sees colors and designs in the shape of the landscapes around her. Her art adventure started when she was in college studying Paleontology at University of Texas Permian Basin, Odessa, TX. A friend brought her into the studio to make molds and casts of bones. After that the rest was history, she was hooked.

Today, her work still brings in some ancient techniques especially in her Raku pottery. Her love for the ancient and natural world comes out in her pottery. Sam’s pottery is both functional and non- functional, she focuses on the beauty of raw clay. She has a fascination with glaze combos and the chemical reactions they create in the kiln. Her pottery pieces are rarely ever the same colors, every piece is unique in its own way and accentuates the beauty of raw clay with stunning natural glaze colors you would see in nature.

Sam’s love for pottery goes beyond just creating. She is a pottery teacher at The Potter’s Shop in Waukesha, WI where she gets to share her knowledge with people every day. She teaches several classes but her favorite class to teach is the Raku class. She gets to intertwin the teaching of an ancient art practice and the creation of beautiful artwork. Teaching is one of her absolute favorite parts of her art adventure.

My work includes wheel-thrown functional pieces and hand-built decorative wall pieces. All of the work is made of stoneware, fired to cone 6, oxidation. The exterior underglaze is applied using brushes and stamps, and functional works include a liner glaze. The imagery reflects natural landscapes from the Midwest.

Clay Fest 2026 Artist --- Melissa Flynn | Free Will Pottery

Melissa Flynn is a ceramic artist focused on crisp lines and dynamic, flowy glazes. As a child, she fell in love with clay during art class—a fascination that only deepened over time. Seeking a creative change from her corporate day job, Melissa enrolled in an adult ceramics class, and she was hooked from the very first session.

Today, her work tries to capture a balance between beauty and function. Influenced by clean architectural lines, Melissa often incorporates slightly cantilevered features, pushing clay to its structural limits. To counterbalance these sharp, precise edges, she uses glazes that evoke a beachy, relaxed vibe—melding rigidity with fluidity in unexpected ways.

Melissa's evolving style reflects her relentless curiosity and passion for ceramic art. Each piece invites viewers to appreciate the tension between structure and softness, honoring both the predictable and the delightfully surprising.
