Hello everyone, very big news for you! Long and sappy post ahead.

Next week marks my last week as an independent personal training business and will be joining back with Lifetime Des Moines as an assistant manager of personal training. The only words I can think of to describe this transition are “bittersweet excitement”. I started Nick Fey Fitness with a vision and a two-stall garage which lead to a full schedule and clients in 5+ states very quickly. It is such a wonderful feeling knowing I was able to facilitate over 2,000 sessions out of this little garage and a variety of other home gyms.

As I have grown so much from this beloved business, I have realized the capacity to which I can personal train while also being a good father and husband. With aspirations of growing our little family, I spent a lot of time evaluating what is best for my family in future years, and Lifetime offered the opportunity of continued growth, working with an amazing staff, and the opportunity to keep helping clients. This position also provided me the opportunity to help other fitness professionals with education and growing their business, both of which I am very passionate about.

To my clients- A business is nothing without its customers. From learning how to run payments on my own through building this gym from the ground up, you all made this possible. The good news is, we don’t stop here. Nothing changes except for the location and the addition of the wonderful facilities Lifetime has available to us. I will still be training, building content, and assisting in creating the healthy way of life.

To my family and friends- Thank you so much for your likes, comments, and shares on my posts. All of my clients were referral based and that stems from you all. The support system I had running this business was incredible.

Most importantly to my wife- You are my rock who has stood by me through all the long work days, travel, and not being able to park your car in the garage. I love you very much and I know you’re excited to get to sit by the Lifetime pool this summer

I am excited for this continued journey with Lifetime, and for those of you interested in the gym or any services we provide I’m extremely happy to help. If you need to contact me for any questions, please feel free to contact my cell at 605-941-1382 or email [email protected]

Thank you!
-Nick

Another Monday, another mobility exercise for you! Todays topic: foam rolling your calves!

As I briefly touch on in the video, foam rolling is an excellent tool to help you achieve a better range of motion or relieve muscle soreness. The catch, though, is you need to pair it with some active stretches (see last weeks video) to maintain that desired range of motion, especially prior to working out.

Thanks for watching and let me know if you have any questions!!

Mobility Monday Part 3!

This one is for all of my follows who are starting their outdoor running now that the weather is (hopefully) staying warmer!

I work with a lot of clients on correcting ankle, knee, and hip pain- which often times occurs when starting a new running program. This dynamic calf stretch is one of my go to stretches for tightness in the lower leg that may occur posteriorly or anteriorly.

Check it out and let me know what you think! 💪🏼

Mobility Week 2!

This week I cover the 90/90 hip switch. As you can tell my hips are a little tight from running earlier in the day so this was great mobility afterward 😅 Try this out with your typical stretching routine with hands on the ground or challenge yourself with hands-free!

NEW CONTENT WOOHOO!

I finally got my mobility series all filmed and ready for you all, so now you always have something to look forward to on Monday’s 💪🏼 The stretches and mobility work I provide are movements I use for my clients daily and I think would be super helpful for more people to utilize.

Todays stretch: 90/90 Glute Stretch
Next week: 90/90 Rotation and Clamshell

Thanks for watching and please share or ask questions!

As I wrap up the final training sessions of 2021, I can’t help reminiscing on when I was deciding to start my own business 16 months ago. I was scared and unsure of my future, but had a lot of passion and a plan.

I am excited to present that in 2021 I serviced over 1400 in-person, travel, and FaceTime personal training sessions throughout the United States. On top of that my online clients tracked over 2000 workouts, averaging 200 workouts per client this year. I am extremely proud of my clients’ success and results from all of this hard work!! You are all what makes this dream a reality, so I appreciate each and every one of you!

As we move into the new year I cannot help but be extremely optimistic. Thank you to my family, friends, and all of my clients for your support. I cannot wait to see what’s around the corner for all of us in this year!

Happy Friday everyone!

I get a lot of questions and comments about simple things people can do at home to stay fit. I figured this would be a great segment to start on Fridays of exercises that you can easily perform at home with little or no weights available!

Todays Friday Feature: Goblet Squats!

I get so many eye rolls when I have clients do goblet squats. Why? I honestly think because it’s not a super flashy exercise to them. To me as their trainer- these squats are so much more than just moving your body up and down. For starters, being able to squat down and get back up is a fundamental movement we do multiple times a day- think of when you pick up your kids, grab something from the bottom shelf, or even getting out of the kitchen chair. Secondly, goblet squats actually work your core and shoulders A LOT. By holding the weight up front, your core has to really put in some work so you don’t fall forwards and your shoulders are helping hold that weight up! My last main point is this- although you may not think you look as “cool” as back squatting lots of weight, the truth of the matter is most of my clients shouldn’t be back squatting in the first place. Unless their goal is to increase that specific lift of back squatting, I don’t see the need to load their spine with a bar on their back when there’s other practical ways to get the same, if not better result. This is not a slight on back squatting as it is one of my personal favorite movements, but the point I’m getting at is there are millions of ways to improve movement and get stronger. Don’t pigeon-hole yourself into thinking there’s only one way to doing it because that’s what you see all over the internet. Being able to perform a goblet squat with half of your body weight for repetitions is a lot more impressive than just having a heavy 1 rep max back squat.

Video 1 is a traditional goblet squat. Video 2 is a heel elevated squat which I often utilize with clients to get a deeper range of motion. Video 3 is a seated squat for those of you who may have injuries that limit range of motion or feel more comfortable starting there. You can use a backpack or bag at home for weights!

Super proud of this guy! During the pandemic he’s lost over 50 pounds (and still counting) plus balances work, family, and social life. Through all that he still finds time to ride his bike all over the city and casually deadlifted 300 for reps today!

Next goal: let’s lift some heavy weights and set some Iowa state lifting records 💪🏼

The only time I love my phone blowing up is from all these online client workouts getting tracked- yesterday totaled over 60!!

I get notifications for each and every workout so I can easily interact with clients about their program and quickly see their progress. Also as you can see- NO ONE has the same program. I firmly believe in unique and custom programs that are 100% specific to you, your goals, and equipment available.

If you’re interested in a free trial or checking out the app, just shoot me a message with your email and I’d be happy to get you started!!
