“The convention was an amazing experience—I felt like Harry Potter arriving at Hogwarts!” - Tony DaSilva

Over Memorial Day weekend, many Artemis Yoga teachers and students traveled to Philadelphia to attend the 2026 IYNAUS Convention, a gathering of the Iyengar Yoga National Association of the United States. IYNAUS hosts these conventions every three years in different regions of the country, and this was the first held in the Northeast in quite some time, drawing a strong contingent of New England Iyengar yogis.

This year’s theme, “Cultivating Freedom,” featured Abhijata Iyengar as the keynote presenter. The program offered five days of practice sessions, three times daily, along with rich conversations, community, and more than a little fun.

The setting felt especially fitting: Philadelphia, in this 250th anniversary year of our nation, offered a powerful backdrop for exploring what freedom truly means. To walk the streets where the Declaration of Independence was signed, to stand before the Liberty Bell, and to carry that spirit into the real world, asking how we might find freedom in our own bodies, gave the theme a resonance beyond the mat.

More than 770 practitioners filled the ballrooms of the Philadelphia Convention Center, with over 200 more joining online. It was an extraordinary experience.

We have gathered reflections from several Artemis Yoga teachers and students who attended, and in this special edition, we are delighted to share them with you. When you see these teachers, ask them more; they will surely be weaving these insights into their classes.

Join us on Wednesday, June 24 at 4:30PM for a special Flow benefit class led by G Christo in honor of Pride month and to raise awareness and support the efforts of Greater Boston PFLAG.

At its essence, yoga is about community and a desire to be of service to others. G is dedicating their regular Flow class to serve as a benefit for Greater Boston PFLAG.

GBPFLAG provides opportunities for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity, and works every day to achieve a vision of a world in which LGBTQ+ individuals are safe, supported, included, and equal in their families, in their communities, and in society.

Meet Michaela! She’s a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher & you can find her subbing this Friday at 4pm & Saturday at 9am.

✨ What inspires you to teach yoga?
I am inspired by love for the practice & curiosity. I haven’t always felt safe or comfortable in my body, but the practice of yoga has allowed me to come back into it more fully. When that started happening, I wanted to understand how & why. It’s a lifetime’s work!

What I want for people who take class with me is to have a moment when they’re able to let go of any stories they may have about who they are or what they are capable of doing and be able to just be, even if it’s for just one breath. There can be so much relief in that moment.

✨ Is there a mantra that resonates with you?

1️⃣ Show up & pay attention. Showing up is the first step. Can I step onto my mat today & practice? Can I go to class? Can I try something new? And if I’m showing up, why not pay full attention? In a world of distraction, the ability to pay attention is a superpower. To me, it’s also a form of respect for others.

2️⃣ What CAN I do? It’s very easy for me to slip into the mindset of “I can’t do this asana! I’ll never be able to do that asana!” (Eka pada rajakapotasana, I’m looking at you!) When that starts happening, I stop & reset by trying to figure out what I CAN do. Can I support myself with a prop so that I can stay in the integrity of the pose? Can I practice a stage of the pose? Can I let go of the expectation that I should be able to reach the full expression of the pose?

✨ If I only have 5 minutes, what poses do you recommend?
Adho Mukha Virasana (child’s pose) => Adho Mukha Svanasana (down dog) => Uttanasana (standing forward fold) => Tadasana (mountain pose)

I love this sequence because it feels like an emergence from the earth, from the ground to the sky. It can be done at any tempo, too — slowly like a meditation, or quickly to raise energy.

✨ How do you spend time outside of the studio?
When I’m not in the studio or wrangling stakeholders for my day job, you’re most likely to find me exploring the streets of a big city in search of live jazz, bookstores, good coffee, lovely food & an amazing glass of wine.
