During a family vacation to Acadia National Park, Steve’s daughter Olivia wanted to take on a more challenging day hike—climbing Mount Katahdin. When they reached the summit, they learned that it is the northernmost terminus of the Appalachian Trail. That challenging climb deepened their love for hiking and inspired Olivia to set a bold goal: to hike the entire trail—which she invited Steve to join.

“Being invited to take on such a meaningful, lengthy adventure with my daughter felt like a dream come true,” Steve shared. “I’m incredibly grateful for my wife Kim’s support as well.”

Steve joined the Y at the beginning of this year to prepare for the journey. This June, he and Olivia will set out on the 2,200-mile trek along the Appalachian Trail, hiking through 14 states with everything they need on their backs.

For Steve, the goal was clear: build strength and prepare his body for long days on the trail, often walking 15 to 20 miles a day. What he didn’t expect was how quickly his routine would expand once he started coming in. “While at the gym working out, I saw so many happy faces walking out of classes that I decided to give it a try,” a decision that quickly became a core part of his training routine.

“Anyone training toward a big personal goal will find tremendous value at the YMCA,” Steve says. He appreciates the guidance and encouragement from Y trainers, as well as the support from others in classes. “There’s a camaraderie that develops—sharing the toughest parts of a workout with others, all while celebrating a sense of accomplishment,” he added. “Those moments create powerful motivation and keep you coming back, ready to take on the next challenge.”

After months of preparation, he’s ready for the trail— and the journey he’ll share with his daughter.
