I am sharing the Board of Education's public comments at Monday night's Town Council meeting. The letters read had been sent to the Town Council but have not been read into record, prior to this, despite requesting that they be. The letters clarrify the $411,000 appropriation the Town asked for from the Town's General fund to the Health Fund which is shared with the Board of Ed. THE board of Ed has contributed and fulfilled the amount obligated by them to the Town for that account. We believe the Town needs to have more transparent communication on the town's part of the fund. At no time did the Board of Education seek to have supplemental appropriation from the Town. We seek clarification as the deficit is not attributed to the Board of Ed in any way.
We also spoke to the Town Council about the nursing at the parochial schools. Clarrifying that the CT General Statues is imposed upon the Town. The BOE is continuing to cover with their budget the requirement of the statute but is asking that the Town find coverage for the full nurse so no cuts to the position is made. Seeing as the budget was cut $800,000 prior to going to referendum the BOE does not have the means to keep that nurse position. I am hopeful that this will clarrify some of the misinformation that has surfaced and also encourage other Town residents to also seek clarification on the health funds appropriation as well as the reason the nursing position was tabled from the agenda on May 20th and not been picked up again.
