I often talk about how ponies become their best selves when they learn to love and trust a child, and over time other children. A pony who wants to take care of a child and do their best for them is worth their weight in gold. I’ve seen “problem” ponies transformed by a child with tenacity and a genuine love for them. Last week I saw that this is also true for horses and adults. I’ve had Izzy for several years now. I tried at first to make her a hunter. I tried a lot of riders on her who couldn’t ride her very bouncy trot and, at least back then, difficult canter. Who were not patient with her need to know you before she will trust you. Who reacted when she was nervous rather than comforting her. And then she met Heather. Heather had the tenacity to stick with Izzy when she was hard. She never tried to make Izzy fit into any box. She just took her time. She got to know Izzy and she took care of her with the same love she takes care of her own horse. She spent time taking her out for hacks and trail rides. She carefully built up her strength, stamina and confidence on the flat a long time before she turned her toward a jump. When she did, she was patient and not punishing when Izzy was figuring it all out. And then the magic began. Izzy began to love and trust Heather. She began to try hard for her. She began to take care of her the best she could. They became a team. Thank you Heather, for loving my horse like your own. For being patient and kind and never having an agenda other finding a job she loves and can do well. Congratulations on an amazing first rated jumper show together. It was all worth the wait to see you both shine. Heather Hammack Loudoun Benefit Horse Show Erin Gilmore Photography
