⚠️ COLD WEATHER ALERT: FREEZING RAIN & ICE EXPECTED ⚠️
This weekend's forecast includes freezing rain, ice, and dangerously low temperatures.
✅Here is a quick checklist to help protect your animals:
🌾 FEEDING IS VERY IMPORTANT
• Provide high fiber forage like coastal hay or alfalfa
• Fiber digestion creates internal body heat
• ❌ Avoid feeding corn during freezing conditions as it does not provide sustained heat and can cause digestive issues
• Make sure animals are well fed BEFORE temperatures drop
🌧️ FREEZING RAIN DANGER
• Cold alone is manageable
• Rain alone is manageable
• 🚨 Freezing rain rapidly strips body heat
🏠 SHELTER AND WIND
• Get animals into covered areas & out of freezing rain
• Shelter does not have to be enclosed but it must keep animals dry and block wind
• Wind greatly increases heat loss
⚠️ Some exotics will not seek shelter on their own and may lie out in freezing rain.
➡️ Physically check and move animals if needed
💧 WATER
• Break ice often so animals always have access to water
• Check troughs day and night
🌙 OVERNIGHT CHECKS
• Check animals throughout the night
• Watch for lethargy shivering or animals lying wet and exposed
• Early action saves lives
🦌 FINAL REMINDER
