Today would have been my sensei’s 67th birthday.

Normally, he would have been out commercial fishing this time of year, so we rarely got the chance to celebrate with him. It feels a little strange that this is his first birthday since we lost him in January.

Today, I’m especially thinking of his family—his wife and his two children—as they remember him. I hope they know how many lives he touched through his years of teaching and mentoring.

I’m grateful for the years he spent encouraging, challenging, and inspiring so many of us. His influence continues every time a student bows onto the mat, practices a kata, helps a classmate…

…even more than that, I think his legacy continues whe we take the time to ask how someone’s day was, and really listen. It continues when we have fun practicing, instead of taking it all so seriously. It continues when we think outside the box and explore what we know.

If you have a favorite memory of sensei Caraway or a birthday wish you’d like to share, I’d love to hear it in the comments. I know his family would appreciate seeing how many people he continues to impact.

Happy Birthday sensei. I miss you every Saturday. I wish I could introduce our new students to you, and watch you make them smile. Thank you for everything you gave to your students. We miss you, and we’ll continue to honor your legacy.

🇺🇸 Happy Fourth of July Weekend! 🇺🇸

Just a friendly reminder that there will be no martial arts classes this Saturday as we take a break to celebrate Independence Day.

🍋 Supporting Local, One Cup at a Time! 🍋

One of my neighbors' granddaughters recently opened her very own lemonade stand, and I couldn't resist stopping by to support a young business owner in the making!

Tonight, I'll be bringing a pitcher of her homemade lemonade to share with our students during class—free of charge. 😊

At Shoshindo of Alaska, we're not just building stronger martial artists; we're building a stronger community. Sometimes that means supporting a young entrepreneur's first business venture, one glass of lemonade at a time.

Students, be sure to grab a cup before or after class tonight!

There will be no martial arts classes tomorrow, Saturday, June 6th, due to a scheduled class cancellation.

While you're enjoying your weekend, try to find 5 minutes to practice—whether it's your kata, basics, kicks, blocks, or stretches. Small, consistent efforts make a big difference over time!

📢 Class Location Update for This Saturday

The gym is hosting an event this weekend, so for the first hour of class we will be training on the upstairs floor instead of our usual space downstairs.

Please arrive a few minutes early so everyone has time to find the correct area and get settled before class begins.

☀️ Summer 2026 Martial Arts Semester – Now Enrolling! 🥋

Our Summer Martial Arts Semester is coming up, and we’d love to have you join us!

This is an 8-week training session designed to help students stay active, build confidence, and continue developing practical self-defense skills in a supportive, family-friendly environment.

Whether you're brand new or continuing your training, our classes are structured to help every student grow at their own pace while training alongside others in a positive and encouraging setting.

📅 Summer Semester Dates
Saturdays: July 11th – August 29th, 2026

👊 Class Times:

Beginners (All levels): 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Advanced (Blue belts & up, teens & adults): 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM

🚫 No class on July 4th weekend

I’m so grateful to Black Birch Books for co-hosting and sponsoring our Women’s Self-Defense Workshop this weekend. It was wonderful to see a local business actively supporting and uplifting women in our community.

Events like this create space for women to come together, learn practical skills, and build confidence in a supportive environment. I truly appreciate Black Birch Books for helping make that possible.
