The image displays six common ways to hold a knife for self-defense, with each grip having distinct characteristics. These grips are variations of two main categories: forward grips and reverse grips.
Forward Grips
Hammer Grip: This is a natural and secure grip, similar to holding a hammer. All fingers are wrapped around the handle with the thumb on top, providing stability for both stabbing and slashing. It is effective for close to medium range and is often used in martial arts like Israeli Krav Maga and Filipino martial art (Kali).
Saber Grip: The hand is wrapped around the handle, but the thumb is placed on the spine of the blade or the hilt. This grip provides better maneuverability and control, though it can be less secure than the hammer grip. It is suitable for cutting chores and thrusting.
Modified Saber Grip: This is a variation of the saber grip where the thumb is placed on the side of the blade. This grip is strong and can naturally orient the knife for horizontal or slashing motions. A potential disadvantage is that the thumb is close to the cutting edge, which can increase the risk of injury.
Filipino Grip: This is a forward grip where the thumb is placed along the spine of the knife. It is often associated with Filipino martial arts and is used to guide and apply pressure to the point of the blade. It is noted for providing better flexibility and a more precise index for thrusting compared to the hammer grip.
Reverse Grips
Reverse Edge Out (RGEO): In this reverse grip, the knife blade extends from the pinky side of the hand, and the cutting edge is oriented away from the body. This grip keeps the cutting edge facing the opponent and allows for powerful slashes and downward thrusts. It is often preferred for close-range combat.
Reverse Edge In (RGEI): This is a reverse grip where the cutting edge faces inward, toward the user. This grip is known for its extreme power in thrusting and its ability to expand a wound channel by pulling the blade inward. It is a powerful offensive tactic, but it carries a higher risk of self-injury.
A safety warning is needed to make sure you use caution and seek professional training before handling weapons.
A safety warning is needed to make sure you use caution and seek professional training before handling weapons.
