I think one of the easiest ways to become an ineffective coach is to refuse to adapt to the generation you’re coaching.
I’ll give you a funny example.
One of my biggest pet peeves has always been getting DMs from young athletes that start with “Yo coach” or “Yo bro.” 😂
Growing up in South Texas, I couldn’t even imagine addressing one of my coaches like that. It was yes sir, no sir, and if you forgot the sir, you were going to have a long day. LOL.
So naturally, every time I get one of those messages, a little part of me cringes.
But recently, one of my players showed me a recruiting message he received from a position coach at an SEC program.
First word of the message?
“Yoooo.” Like that. With the extra O’s.
I about fell out of my chair. 😂
And it got me thinking. Maybe I’m the one who needs to get over it.
That doesn’t mean I think respect, manners, or professionalism are any less important today. I still believe those things matter tremendously.
But I also think sometimes we confuse the way WE were raised with the only right way to do things.
These kids communicate differently. And if college coaches at the highest levels are finding ways to connect with them on their terms, maybe there’s something to learn from that.
I don’t have to love every change that comes with a new generation. But I do have to understand the people I’m trying to lead.
Because at some point if every generation after yours is the problem, maybe it’s worth looking in the mirror.
Anyway, I guess “Yo coach” is officially off my list of things to complain about. 😂
