This week, at Plaza de la Constitución, in front of Palacio de La Moneda, we held the Official Launch of the Special Olympics World Games Santiago 2027. 🇨🇱

The celebration was led by Unified Sports, where people with and without intellectual disabilities compete on the same team. It is a model of inclusion that can be replicated in every area of society, and it will take center stage at the upcoming World Games. 🌎

This gathering was the kickoff of an event that invites all citizens to come together through sport, toward a more inclusive society. Welcome to Santiago 2027! 🔥

Esta semana en la Plaza de la Constitución, frente al Palacio de La Moneda, realizamos el Lanzamiento Oficial de los Juegos Mundiales de Olimpiadas Especiales Santiago 2027. 🇨🇱

La celebración estuvo marcada por el Deporte Unificado, aquel en que personas con y sin discapacidad intelectual forman parte del mismo equipo. Una modelo de inclusión replicable a todos los ámbitos de la sociedad, que será protagonista de los próximos Juegos Mundiales. 🌎

Next year, the world’s largest event for people with intellectual disabilities is coming to Chile. 🇨🇱

The Special Olympics World Games Santiago 2027 will serve as a gathering place to build a more aware and inclusive country.

This is a unique opportunity for Chile to take a three-decade leap forward in inclusion and move toward a country with more opportunities for everyone.

The Asociación Chilena de Municipalidades; Olimpiadas Especiales Chile; and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the Santiago 2027 World Games signed an agreement to promote the development of inclusive sports in municipalities and bring the legacy of the Games to communities across the country. 🏙️🏔️

The meeting was attended by Minister of Sports Natalia Duco; Special Olympics Chile President Carolina Picasso; LOC Executive Director Rodrigo Gardella; and ACHM Sports Commission Chair and Mayor of Temuco, Roberto Neira.

The agreements will help strengthen the Host Regions Program, through which international delegations will be able to tour different parts of the country before the start of the sporting event. In addition, they will facilitate coordination between local governments and initiatives such as training for coaches and municipal teams, organizing clinics and competitions, identifying and preparing athletes, promoting inclusive sports facilities, and expanding the Special Olympics movement to all 16 regions of the country.

In Chile, this August 9, we celebrate Children’s Day, an opportunity to celebrate childhood and remember the importance of giving every child the chance to play, discover and reach their full potential. 💙

Through Special Olympics’ Young Athletes program, children ages 2 to 7, with and without intellectual disabilities, find in play an opportunity to discover their abilities, learn and share with others, showing that inclusion starts with play.

In 1968, the first Special Olympics World Games were held in Chicago. This marked the beginning of a journey spanning 16 editions that have taken place in the United States, Ireland, China, Greece, the United Arab Emirates, and Germany—countries where millions of people have witnessed the growth of a movement that transforms lives and societies through sports. 💪🥇

Special Olympics athletes don't just compete: they lead. Through Athlete Leadership Programs, they raise their voices on boards, committees, and international forums, representing their community and helping decide the direction of the very movement they drive. 🏆

This Global Week of Inclusion is an opportunity to spotlight that leadership. While the world talks about inclusion, they're already living it: representing their countries, taking part in decisions that directly affect them, and proving that leadership doesn't depend on a condition, but on the will to step into it.

With this goal in mind, Santiago 2027 will drive a three-decade leap toward a more inclusive society, one that gives people with intellectual disabilities real opportunities to improve their quality of life.

Advocating for inclusion is not a symbolic gesture. It is an active stance that translates into creating spaces where everyone can participate and drive change.

Being part of Special Olimpics means advocating for a society in which intellectual disability is not a reason for exclusion, but rather a reason for connection. Every action counts: from a simple conversation to public policy.

This Global Week of Inclusion, we reaffirm that commitment. As we look ahead to the Special Olympics World Games Santiago 2027, we continue to build the spaces that inclusion requires.

As part of Global Week of Inclusion, we highlight the work of Special Olympics Asia Pacific, Malaysia, which is dedicated to helping children with intellectual and developmental disabilities access the health care they need to reach their full potential. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦🧑‍⚕️

Leading this effort is Dr. Teck-Hock Toh, who, together with his team, provides medical checkups, timely diagnoses, and ongoing follow-up in communities where such care is not always available.

Their work serves as a reminder that inclusion is also built through healthcare.
