Ironman Lake Placid
Tanya and I decided to take on Ironman over a year ago and trained without a coach. Long rides and runs on weekends in the heat, snow or rain and many pool swims and a couple open water swims that I never really got excited about. We had no idea what we were doing or really what we were getting ourselves into for that matter. We knew that we had just enough discipline and sheer will-power to hope it would carry us through.
The week before the race the nerves settled in. Consumed by constant thoughts of how the day might play out. Everything felt incredibly real. We were jittery, excited, and terrified. Our kids (Jaden & Joey), Nick, Mason, JoAnna Simpson-Brown, my brother-in-law, Gary and mom supported us at the race until the bitter end. It was a very long day for them.
Lake Placid was buzzing. The energy at the Expo was electric. First-timers and pros! We traded stories, asked questions, shared our fears, and fantasized crossing that finish-line.
Check in. Rack Bike. Fill Transition bags...
Race morning came fast. I was a zombie walking to the start of the swim with Nick. His support meant the world to me. My heart was racing and my mantra on repeat: "You were made for this." S**t, no one is made for this. This race is insane. It's beautiful, epic, and borderline impossible. Ambulances. Crashes. People sidelined. But Every step was one step closer to meeting my goal and crossing that finish line. And somehow, some way…I did.
Ironman Lake Placid was a bear. It tested my fears, my limits, and my will. Things went right. It was my day.
I wasn’t made for this.
But I became someone who could do it anyway. Thank you, Tanya! XO
