As runners get older, chasing pace at every session can do more harm than good.

Instead of obsessing over what your watch says, Olympian Jo Pavey recommends focusing on effort – a simple shift that can help you train smarter, stay healthier and keep improving for longer.

When taper week includes work travel across the country, delayed flights, and a Mumford and Sons concert, you might not expect race day to pan out too well, but for Cathy, it resulted in first place female finisher (at age 53!) in 3:17, at the Bear Paw Marathon!

This finish is especially meaningful for us, as we’ve coached Cathy since February 2020, when Covid thwarted any racing plans. We’ve been with Cathy through a move across the country and Achilles surgery that sidelined her for the second half of 2024. Cathy works a demanding job that requires extensive travel, and has to train through the unpredictable Montana winter. She has a healthy, balanced perspective on her running that allows her to be flexible with her training. This year, Cathy added Pilates and yoga to her regular weekly routine, which no doubt helped her avoid injury and run strong this training cycle.

We are so happy to see Cathy continue to achieve big goals, and can’t wait to see how the fitness she built in the first half of this year lays a foundation for Chicago in October! Congrats, Cathy!

We've worked with Megan, who also lives locally to us in the DMV area, since 2021. We always knew that Megan had potential to put up fast race times, but running often took a back seat to Megan's busy life juggling work and two young kids. Megan also has celiac disease, which makes dialing in nutrition, especially for a marathon, challenging.

Earlier this year, Megan decided she wanted to commit to getting back to the marathon, and was curious to know if she could run a marathon PR. Her previous PR was a 3:16 from 2014, over a decade ago. She knew it would mean early morning runs before work and kids' weekend activities, and figuring out nutrition to support her training. We were so excited, because we believed in Megan's potential and knew that she could smash that PR. Megan made plans with friends to target the Utah Valley Marathon.

The training cycle wasn't without it's challenges and doubts. Life threw Megan lots of curveballs, and many times, she wasn't sure she was going to be ready, physically or mentally, for the marathon. In Mid-April, we had a phone call and decided to give it until the deadline for switching to the half marathon (May 15th) before making the call. We knew Megan was looking forward to the trip with friends, and encouraged her to keep an open mind as race day got closer.

On May 15th, Megan told us she had made the decision to stick with the full marathon. "I’m excited to do this. I want to test my fitness and I want to see the payoff from this really long training cycle. This has been on my mind since December. Thank you for your help and support."

Megan worked closely with ProAction Physical Therapy and with Suzie Collyer, a local massage therapist, to stay ahead of any niggles during training. Before race day, we enouraged Megan to work with Claire from Eat for Endurance to help fine tune her nutrition plan, especially given her Celiac disease. Those sessions gave Megan confidence in her nutrition plan for race day, one of the last pieces of the puzzle.

Today, Megan executed a beautiful negative split on the Utah Valley full marathon course, finishing in 3:08:20, and proving to herself that she is stronger than she thought. We could not be prouder of Megan for having the courage to go for big goals and to believe in herself. Congrats, Megan!!

“Recently, another important side effect has been detected and this one is of particular interest to athletes. Data presented at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Annual Meeting reported on patients with obesity with or without diabetes, using GLP-1 agonists who were found to have statistically significantly increased rates of injuries to tendons. Tears of the rotator cuff, Achilles tendon, peroneal tendon (a tendon of the calf), and pectoralis tendon were all seen at a rate about 50% higher than in those not taking these drugs.

It is important to note that while the risk of tendon rupture was about 1.5 times higher for those who were taking GLP-1 receptor agonists than for those who were not, that risk was still very low. About 0.3% for Achilles tendon rupture (vs. 0.2%), 2.4% for rotator cuff (vs. 1.5%) and 0.8% for rupture of the pectoralis tendon (vs. 0.5%). So, this is not an epidemic of tendon injuries. Still, the increase is real.”

New data reveals that the widely used weight-loss drugs GLP-1 receptor agonists are associated with a significantly increased risk of serious tendon injuries - a concerning finding for endurance athletes using the medication, says Dr. Jeffrey Sankoff.
