We've worked with Megan, who also lives locally to us in the DMV area, since 2021. We always knew that Megan had potential to put up fast race times, but running often took a back seat to Megan's busy life juggling work and two young kids. Megan also has celiac disease, which makes dialing in nutrition, especially for a marathon, challenging.
Earlier this year, Megan decided she wanted to commit to getting back to the marathon, and was curious to know if she could run a marathon PR. Her previous PR was a 3:16 from 2014, over a decade ago. She knew it would mean early morning runs before work and kids' weekend activities, and figuring out nutrition to support her training. We were so excited, because we believed in Megan's potential and knew that she could smash that PR. Megan made plans with friends to target the Utah Valley Marathon.
The training cycle wasn't without it's challenges and doubts. Life threw Megan lots of curveballs, and many times, she wasn't sure she was going to be ready, physically or mentally, for the marathon. In Mid-April, we had a phone call and decided to give it until the deadline for switching to the half marathon (May 15th) before making the call. We knew Megan was looking forward to the trip with friends, and encouraged her to keep an open mind as race day got closer.
On May 15th, Megan told us she had made the decision to stick with the full marathon. "I’m excited to do this. I want to test my fitness and I want to see the payoff from this really long training cycle. This has been on my mind since December. Thank you for your help and support."
Megan worked closely with ProAction Physical Therapy and with Suzie Collyer, a local massage therapist, to stay ahead of any niggles during training. Before race day, we enouraged Megan to work with Claire from Eat for Endurance to help fine tune her nutrition plan, especially given her Celiac disease. Those sessions gave Megan confidence in her nutrition plan for race day, one of the last pieces of the puzzle.
Today, Megan executed a beautiful negative split on the Utah Valley full marathon course, finishing in 3:08:20, and proving to herself that she is stronger than she thought. We could not be prouder of Megan for having the courage to go for big goals and to believe in herself. Congrats, Megan!!
