Head Coach – Youth Tackle Rugby - Washington DC Youth Rugby
Washington DC Youth Rugby is seeking an experienced and passionate Head Coach to lead and grow our youth tackle rugby program. Our teams include U12 and U14 co-ed squads, as well as U16 and U19 boys’ and girls’ teams. We are looking for an engaging, energetic, positive person that will help us fulfill our mission to reach out to underserved children in Washington, DC to promote health and physical fitness and teach valuable life skills through the sport of rugby.
This is a year-round, stipend-based role requiring evening and weekend availability during the playing season, as well as off-season responsibilities including planning, coach development, player recruitment, and broader program-building. The expected time commitment is approximately 10 hours per week, with seasonal variation based on practices, matches, and program activities.
Position Summary
The Head Coach is responsible for the overall leadership, development, and delivery of the youth tackle rugby program. This includes coaching oversight across all age groups, mentoring assistant coaches, and ensuring a safe, structured, and positive learning environment for all athletes.
This role is ideal for a coach who is both a strong on-field instructor and a program builder committed to community impact.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership
Oversee all tackle rugby teams (U12–U19), ensuring alignment with organizational goals and values
Lead, mentor, and support assistant coaches across age groups
Contribute to long-term player development pathways
Coaching & Player Development
Design and implement structured, age-appropriate training sessions
Ensure all players are taught safe and effective tackling techniques
Foster a positive, inclusive, and development-focused environment
Practice & Match Management
Plan and communicate training sessions in advance
Attend all practices and matches
Prepare players physically and mentally for competition
Ensure equitable participation during matches
Maintain a positive sideline presence and model sportsmanship
Player Safety & Compliance
Enforce safety standards in line with USA Rugby guidelines
Ensure proper equipment use (including mandatory mouthguards)
Be knowledgeable about injury prevention and reporting, concussion protocols, emergency action plan and ensure injured players are fully cleared before returning to play.
Maintain a safe, inclusive and supportive environment for all participants
Community & Culture
Support outreach efforts to grow participation, particularly in underserved communities
Promote the values of teamwork, respect, and inclusion
Qualifications
Current or willingness to obtain USA Rugby CIPP registration (background check required)
Level 2 coaching certification required; commitment to achieving Level 3 preferred
Completion of Concussion Management Training & Safesport Training
Experience coaching youth rugby or similar team sports
Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
Passion for youth development and community impact
Compensation
$2,500 per month (year-round stipend) as a 1099 contractor
Certification and registration costs covered or reimbursed
Washington DC Youth Rugby does not offer any benefits packages or employment insurance
