About A. Weber Company

The A. Weber Company was a wholesale hardware distributor based in Keokuk during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Like many regional hardware wholesalers of the era, Weber did not manufacture axes themselves. Instead, they contracted established axe makers to produce tools that carried the Weber brand.

Their products were distributed throughout Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, and surrounding states.

“Webers Imperial”

“Imperial” was Weber’s premium line.

The markings:

* Highest Grade
* Fully Warranted

were common marketing terms used on top-tier axes of the period, indicating the company considered them premium quality tools.

The “Imperial” line was generally positioned above economy-grade hardware store axes.

Finally got a bear for sportsman hatchet. I’m missing one hatchet from the “for sportsman” collection, that I know of, which is the Coca-Cola for sportsman hatchet. This is a big part of my niche as a collector, and they hit lots of areas. Etched/Stamped, wildlife, outdoor sportsman since I like to hunt. So now I’m hunting a Coca-Cola for sportsman hatchet. 😁

Some tools were made to work.
Others were made to build history.

This vintage Witte Hardware Co. broad axe out of St. Louis, U.S.A. dates back to a time when men stood beside raw timber and hewed entire beams by hand. Before portable sawmills… before modern framing crews… tools like this helped build barns, cabins, churches, and bridges one swing at a time.

The weight.
The forged steel.
The wide sweeping bit.
Every inch of it tells a story from an era when craftsmanship demanded sweat, precision, and endurance.

Hard to believe a single tool could carry this much history.

This one survived. And it still looks ready to work.

Gorgeously restored vintage black raven axe with a custom curly maple with lots of figure and character. A walnut cross wedge and brass to add! Beautiful French walnut palm swell to boot.

Spent the weekend in Ohio with a bunch of guys from all over the country who somehow think swinging sharp objects and bringing old axes back to life is a perfectly normal hobby… and honestly, they’re right.

These guys surprised me with a birthday axe that they all had a hand in making. So basically, if it ever fails… I know exactly who to call out. 😄 But for real—that’s one of the coolest, most meaningful gifts I’ve ever received.

We packed the weekend with shop time, great meals, a lot of laughs, and just enough “expert opinions” to keep things interesting. There’s nothing like a group of guys standing around a vise solving the world’s problems.

Grateful for the friendships, the memories, and now… one more axe I didn’t know I needed.
