🧠 WEDNESDAY RESEARCH

Back-to-School Edition: Exercise & the Brain!

The backpacks are packed, school is back in session, and our kids are getting back into the rhythm of learning—and that means their brains are getting quite the workout, too!

So this week, we asked:

What does physical activity actually do for a child’s brain?

A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis looked at 2,655 children across multiple studies.

Researchers found that exercise was associated with improvements in several important thinking skills:

🧠 Inhibitory control — being able to stop and think before reacting

🧠 Working memory — holding information in your mind and using it

🧠 Cognitive flexibility — being able to adjust when something isn’t working

Sound familiar?

These are skills kids use ALL day at school.

đŸ€” Think about a Hapkido class:
👂Listen.
💭Remember.
🏃Move.
🛑Stop.
👌 Adjust.
đŸ”„Try again.

And do it all while paying attention to what’s happening around you!

That’s not just a workout. That’s a workout for the brain, too.

As our kids are back in school, regular physical activity may be giving their developing brains another valuable opportunity to practice these skills.

And that’s one more reason we’re happy to see our students back on the mat!

đŸ„‹ Train the body. Train the mind. Build the person. đŸ„‹

Busy bodies = focused minds. đŸ„‹

Kids have ENERGY. A lot of it. And that’s okay!

When we give them a positive place to move, challenge themselves, and work hard, they’re doing more than just burning off energy.

They’re building focus.
They’re practicing self-control.
They’re improving coordination.
They’re gaining confidence.

Sometimes the best way to help a busy kid focus
is to let them get busy!

That’s one of the things we love about Hapkido. We keep their bodies moving while teaching their minds to slow down, listen, think, and respond.

Busy bodies. Focused minds. Stronger kids.

đŸ„‹WEEKLY SCHEDULE REMINDER!

We only have TWO days of classes this week before we take a little break!

đŸ”„ MONDAY
5:45–6:30 PM — Elite Class
6:30–7:30 PM — Adult Boxing

đŸ”„ TUESDAY
5:30–6:15 PM — Kids Beginner
6:15–7:00 PM — Kids Intermediate
7:00–7:45 PM — Kids Advanced
7:45–8:45 PM — Adult Class

Let’s make these two days count! Bring the energy, bring your best effort, and let’s finish strong! đŸ’Ș

Then enjoy that “break” while you can
because we’ll be back before you know it!! 😉

See you on the mats!

What if “groundfighting” taught your child more than how to fight?

It teaches them how to:

đŸ„‹ Control their body
🧠 Think while under pressure
đŸ’Ș Build strength and coordination
đŸ€ Work with a partner
đŸ—Łïž Communicate and respect boundaries
🧡 Build confidence without needing to be the toughest kid in the room

For younger kids, groundfighting is about learning to move, problem-solve, stay calm, and keep trying when something doesn’t go their way.

And honestly
. watching that confidence grow is one of the best parts of what we do. 👏

Not every class goes exactly as planned — and that’s okay.

With school starting back up, we know the kids are tired, distracted, and sometimes just not quite as focused as they were during summer.

Does that mean we give up? Absolutely not. We adapt.

Flexibility is something we practice in every class — not just through our techniques, but in how we teach.

At Hapkido Plus, we learn to recognize when the kids need a change of pace. The kids learn that challenges are part of learning and everyone working with them learns that sometimes the best way forward is to take a breath, put on a welcoming smile, and add a little fun.

Because sometimes the best lesson isn’t the one we planned.

It’s learning how to adjust, keep going, and have fun along the way.

That’s martial arts. That’s life. That’s Hapkido Plus!

WEDNESDAY RESEARCH

Back to School Edition! 📚

School is back, backpacks are packed, and kids are getting back into their routines!

So we thought this would be a fun time to ask:

Can martial arts help kids do better in school?

Here’s something pretty cool

Researchers studied 102 children and compared kids who participated in martial arts, team sports, or no organized sport.

The martial arts group showed better executive functioning and higher school marks than the other groups.

So what is “executive functioning”?

It’s the brain’s ability to:

🧠 Pay attention
🧠 Remember information
🧠 Control impulses
🧠 Plan and organize
🧠 Make decisions
🧠 Adjust when something isn’t working

Now think about what happens during a Hapkido class

✅A student has to listen to instructions.
✅Remember techniques.
✅Follow a sequence.
✅Control their movements.
✅Work with a partner.
✅Accept corrections.
✅And keep trying when something doesn’t work the first time.

They’re training more than their body.

They’re practicing skills that can help them focus, problem-solve, remember and stay in control.

And as our kids head back into the classroom, those are some pretty valuable skills to have!

Does Hapkido guarantee better grades? Of course not!

But research gives us another reason to believe that what happens on the mat can have benefits far beyond the dojo.

So here’s to a new school year full of learning, growing, trying new things and becoming a little stronger every day!

đŸ„‹ Train the body. Train the mind. Build the person.
