I’d like to start off by saying thank you to everyone for being so patient with me. I’ve kept our class on hiatus for a while as I’ve contemplated restructuring the class from the ground up, not only in terms of curriculum, but also in identity.

With that said, one of the first changes being implemented is a name change. Warrensburg Wing Chun is now known as So Family Wing Chun. This allows me to honor my father’s teaching and how it points back to our Wing Chun ancestors, while remaining a unique branch of Ip Man Wing Chun.

I’m not sure what the future looks like in terms of starting an in person class. In the meantime, I plan on recording and releasing videos on a semi-regular basis as a way of re-examining the curriculum.

Thank you for your continued support!

Wing Chun Punch Mechanics: Vertical Fist, elbow slightly bent when contact is made. The punch should start slightly lower and end at around shoulder level, this gives an uprooting motion and can minimize any possible counter attacks coming from above the arm. “If performed correctly, the punch should drop the subject right there. In case you’re not good enough, however, a straight punch may allow the opponent the opportunity to strike you. Punching slightly upward will eliminate this possibility.” — GM Ho Kam Ming

Rather than just throwing punches today, we learned about incorporating the whole body into our punches. Footwork is just as essential to the punch as the arm motion.

As an “internal” marital art, doesn’t necessarily always produce the spectacular knockout punches that you see in boxing/mma. But what is flashy isn’t always necessarily the most effective thing.

Worked on the self defense approach to dealing by with successive jabs today. First, analyze the direction of attack and get your body out of the way by taking a diagonal step (forward/outside). Next, your block doesn’t have to stay put if the attack retracts, but treat it as if it were still coming in. Finally, don’t focus on the punch you’ve already blocked, keep a broad view of the body and be ready for the next attack.

Chi Sao (Sticky Hands) is a free flowing, improvised drill where we learn to read our opponents through the sense of touch. This is not sparring, but a stepping stone towards sparring.
