“Kind” is the first word that comes to mind when describing Pretty Boy. This grade buckskin gelding is kind, gentle, and very sweet. He loads and hauls like a champ, stands tied, crosses obstacles such as creeks and bridges with care and good sense, side passes/half passes/turns over his hocks, picks up both leads, and is a very well broke horse. No buck/bite/rear or other dangerous vices, however he does like to move out so may not be best suited as a beginner horse. His previous owner thought he was 14, his teeth read more like late teens. Easy keeper, great bone and big solid hooves. Current coggins, has been recently adjusted by an equine chiropractor, is up to date on hoof care, and was vaccinated with a 4-way (flu/tetanus/Eastern and Western Sleeping Sickness) late last fall. He’s ready to go have an adventure!

I purchased Diesel last fall as an unbroke prospect. Due to the uncooperative weather over the winter (did ANYONE get to ride?), he mostly stood around and ate hay. Every time we got a break in the weather, though, I'd pull him out, work him, and marvel at how well he came back. He's very laid back, doesn't get bothered by new things, yet has enough talent buried under his lazy, wooly coat that I think he's going to make a very nice horse. Up to date on shots, teeth, and feet, and has a current negative Coggins. He will continue in training until sold.

Look at those hindquarters! This filly, foaled in late April, possesses old-fashioned bulldog-type Quarter Horse shape and great color. Lots of dun factor here with zebra stripes on her legs and cobwebbing on her face. Her dam shed out to be a grullo at 2, there is a possibility that her baby will be mouse-colored as well. This filly's breeder has been a Flint Hills rancher for most of her life, and has selected for good using horses. Filly has been imprinted and handled but not spoiled. Both sire and dam have been used as ranch horses. Sired by Flying W Ranch's stallion, A Hollywood Diamond, who is a grandson of the great Hollywood Dun It, and out of Sun Rock Ginger Snap, a Zans Rawhide-bred mare. Priced at $1,800 and papers for AQHA registration will be sent in soon.

So the conclusion from the past year is that I can't really quit :-) My break from officially running my business has been great, it's renewed my enthusiasm about riding and horses, and enabled me to try some new things. Namely, FOXHUNTING!!! I have had so much fun this past year with the Fort Leavenworth Hunt. If you have ever thought about trying it, we have an introductory "camp" coming up June 23rd, as well as the 8EZ Lessons series this fall, which is how I got started. This group is wonderfully welcoming, you can ride English or Western, and jumping is optional. It's worth trying!

Glow Ever Zippo is a 2009 model, 15.1 HH red roan mare that has been used for riding lessons for the past several years. We've taken her on numerous trail rides in the pastures surrounding the barn, and hauled her to a few local saddle club shows. In lessons, she's been used for beginner through advanced riders, Western and English. Students have jumped her up to 2', opened and closed gates, played horse soccer, dropped their reins and pretended to fly, and all sorts of other shennanigans. She's been a good lesson horse, her very smooth jog and lope have made it easy for the students to learn to ride, and she did a good job of putting up with all the things we asked her to do. However, we've moved from a barn with an indoor arena to a flat spot out in the pasture as our arena, and “Scuzzie” moves out too well to pack beginners around in that environment. Since we have several other expenses to take care of before building an arena, and I have more lesson horses than students right now, I would like to sell Scuzzie to someone who will use and appreciate this really nice mare. She neckreins, picks up both leads, gives her face easily, moves off your leg, and just generally has a good handle. Scuzzie is by Shannon Creek Cattle Company's stallion “Most Handsome,” and is enrolled in the Ranching Heritage program. Asking $2,500.

Change is difficult. I have met so many wonderful people because of my horse business. I love sharing my knowledge, respect, and love for horses. Lately, however, it's become more of a burden than a joy. I'm tired of focusing on turning a profit from my passion. Therefore, I've made the decision to close my business. I'm not sure yet whether it is permanent or temporary. If you have unused lessons, I would appreciate it if you would try to schedule something before June 1st. I am still more than willing to share my knowledge and my horses, so to all the friends I have made, please don't be strangers :-)

We've moved! The horses (and pony) are now 4 miles north of Wamego, and on site at our house! It makes it so much easier to do chores and keep an eye on everyone, and Miss June is having a lot of fun with Sam :-) Lessons will continue through the winter as weather permits.
