Waltonville Finishes Historic Season as State Runner-Up

PEORIA — The Waltonville Lady Spartans capped off one of the most successful softball seasons in program history Saturday, earning a second-place finish in the IHSA Class 1A State Tournament after a hard-fought 2-1 loss to Dakota in the state championship game.

Waltonville battled toe-to-toe with the Indians throughout the afternoon and appeared poised to bring home the program's first state title after taking an early lead.

The Lady Spartans broke through in the bottom of the third inning when Elyssa Schoenbaechler delivered a clutch RBI double to left-center field, scoring Briley Williams and giving Waltonville a 1-0 advantage.

That lead held until the sixth inning as Waltonville's defense and pitching kept Dakota off the scoreboard. The Indians finally answered in the top of the sixth when Finley Banks tripled to left-center field, driving home Dawson Lawler to tie the game at 1-1.

With the contest deadlocked entering the seventh, Dakota pushed across the decisive run. Hailey Kerchner came around to score on a throwing error, giving the Indians a 2-1 lead.

Waltonville was unable to answer in its final at-bat, ending a remarkable postseason run just one run shy of a state championship.

While the loss was a difficult way to conclude the season, the Lady Spartans leave Peoria with plenty to celebrate. Waltonville established itself among the state's elite programs, reaching the Class 1A title game and bringing home a state trophy. Even more encouraging, the future remains bright as the Lady Spartans are set to return nearly their entire roster next spring, losing just one starter to graduation.

With a talented core returning and valuable state tournament experience now under its belt, Waltonville appears well-positioned to make another deep postseason run in 2027.

What a team!!💙🥎❤️

This season was never defined by a trophy—it was defined by the incredible journey.

These Lady Spartans accomplished something truly special, earning their place among the best teams in Illinois and creating memories that will last a lifetime. They battled, believed, and achieved things that many only dream about, all while representing their schools and communities with pride.

The wins, the celebrations, the road to state, and the bonds formed along the way are what make this team unforgettable. They made history, inspired young athletes, and gave all of us a season we’ll be talking about for years to come.

No matter what the final scoreboard said, this team’s legacy is already written. They are champions in every way that counts. From the first pitch to the final out, they showed heart, determination, resilience, and pride every single step of the way.

Thank you, Lady Spartans, for an incredible ride. The memories are forever, and so is the pride we have in this team. ❤️🥎💙

Waltonville's Historic Season Ends with State Runner-Up Finish

The Waltonville Lady Spartans saw their remarkable season come to a heartbreaking end Saturday afternoon, but not before making school history.

In his 12th season at the helm, Head Coach John Kiselewski guided Waltonville to its first-ever IHSA State Softball Tournament appearance, where the Lady Spartans finished as Class 1A State Runner-Up following a 2-1 loss to Dakota in the championship game at the Louisville Slugger Sports Complex in Peoria.

Waltonville concluded its memorable campaign with a 33-7 record, earning the highest state finish in program history.

The Lady Spartans struck first in the bottom of the third inning when Elyssa Schoenbaechler delivered an RBI double to left-center field, scoring Briley Williams and giving Waltonville a 1-0 advantage.

That lead held until the sixth inning when Dakota's Finley Banks tied the game with an RBI triple to left-center, bringing home Dawson Lawler to make it 1-1.

The deciding run came in the top of the seventh inning. Dakota's Hailey Kerchner crossed the plate on a throwing error, giving the Indians a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.

Despite the tough ending, Waltonville's state tournament run capped off a season for the record books. The Lady Spartans not only reached the state finals for the first time in school history but also established themselves among the elite programs in Class 2A softball. While the championship trophy narrowly slipped away, Waltonville's historic journey and runner-up finish will be remembered as one of the greatest seasons the program has ever produced. And with only 1 senior starter, this team is loaded for another run at the title next season.

Congrats Elyssa and Briley!!
