FINAL: Goreville 5, WSV 4

The WSV Spartans fell to Goreville Blackcats 5-4 on Saturday on the final play of the game in the Cobden 1A Sectional Championship. The game was tied at four with Goreville batting in the bottom of the eleventh when Francis singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.

Goreville fired up the offense in the third inning. Gower singled on a 3-2 count, scoring one run.

WSV knotted the game up at three in the top of the fifth inning when Blake Menser singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.

Drake Buffington was the winning pitcher for Goreville Blackcats. The righty lasted two-thirds of an inning, allowing zero hits and zero runs while striking out two and walking none. Ian Sopczak threw five and a third innings in relief out of the bullpen.

Tyler Hammond took the loss for the Spartans. The righty surrendered one run on three hits over two and two-thirds innings, striking out two.

Brandon Menser started the game for WSV. The righthander surrendered four runs on six hits over eight innings, striking out six. Hunter Francis started the game for the Goreville Blackcats. The hurler surrendered four runs on five hits over five innings, striking out seven.

Blake Menser led WSV with three hits in five at bats.

WSV finished the season 20-9 ⚾️
