It's that time again. FestiVELO planning is in full swing as we are only a short time away from our 29th event.

Pulling off an event of this magnitude is no easy feat, and it surely can't be accomplished without our talented volunteers who support FestiVELO year after year.

We'd love to see you in Walterboro again this year. Please go to www.festivelo.org and click on Volunteer. You'll see what positions are available and you can sign up for whatever interests you.

Even if you plan on riding, you can still volunteer. Or, if you are bringing a non-rider with you, they can volunteer while you're out on the trail.

We are just a few short months away from the most unique bicycling event in the USA, FestiVELO. We'll be in the Front Porch of the Lowcountry, Walterboro, SC, from Nov 4-8.

New routes, new lunch menu, and live post-ride music are just a few of the improvements we've made for this year. But don't worry, we'll still have Wednesday W**e, Friday Chocolate and Saturday Oyster Roast.

Your FestiVELO team is happy to announce we have made some adjustments to the routes for this year's ride.


1. We have added intermediate (~45-mile) routes for each day, offering an option for riders who want something longer than the ~31-mile short route, but not so challenging as the longer ~62-mile medium route.

2. We have swapped the Thursday and Friday routes, so folks not arriving until Friday can now enjoy the northeast route out to the Round O area.

3. We have moved the Sunday routes back to St. George and included the church campgrounds again. Our longest ride Sunday will be the 65-mile medium route.

4. Since we’re not offering an official long route on Sunday, The Iron Butt Trophy can now be claimed by riding the ~100-mile long routes Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The trophies will be presented at dinner Saturday evening.

The routes will be posted to our webpage as we get closer to the event date. Road construction, weather, and many other factors could cause us to make last minute changes.

In addition to the route adjustments, we have made changes to our lunches, food trucks will be available to purchase dessert Friday and Saturday, and we will have live music Thursday, Friday and Saturday when you return from your ride.

Join us for what promises to be the best FestiVELO yet. And don't worry, we're still going to have W**e Down Wednesday, Chocolate on Friday, and Oyster Roast on Saturday.

Your FestiVELO team is hard at work to make this year's event better than ever and we're happy to announce the daily lunch menu for this year's ride.

Thursday:

Pimento Cheese Sandwiches and homemade tomato soup. This is a perennial favorite and we're happy to bring it back this year.

Friday:

Kees Kitchen - This is one of Charleston's best known pop-up catering and mobile kitchens. They'll be onsite serving your choice of Brisket Sliders, BBQ Bratwurst, or Portabello Tacos.

Saturday:

Side Street Deli - This downtown Walterboro sandwich shop serves up great sandwiches and we're excited to have them join the FestiVELO family this year. You'll have your choice of one of four sandwich options, including one for our vegetarian riders.

Sunday:

You asked for it and we're going to deliver! We'll be serving lunch back at the World's Grits Festival location in St. George, and Shrimp & Grits is on the menu.

And last but not least...

We're ramping up the "Festival" part of FestiVELO this year by bringing in ColdFire Creamery Thursday from 12-3. They'll have a variety of ice cream flavors and milkshakes available for purchase.

And on Friday from 12-3, Heavenly Cheesecakes by Tony will be onsite selling slices of their homemade cheesecakes. Check out the flavors!

Your FestiVELO team prides itself on taking care of our riders before, during, and after each day's miles have been counted.

From our fantastic breakfasts, lunches, and dinners, fully supported rest stops, and evening themed events and guest speakers, FestiVELO is four days of cycling, food, fun, and fellowship with more than 300 of the nicest people from across the United States and overseas.

We are happy to announce that we'll be offering three post-ride therapy opportunities to help you get ready for the next day's ride.

Yolanda Claibourn and her team from Claibourns Wellness and Massage will return with post-ride massages Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Emilee Hall will lead free post-ride yoga sessions from 3:30-4:30 Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

And, Johnny Zecopoulos will bring his leg compression sleeves. These sleeves can help improve blood flow, reduce swelling, and help muscles recover faster. Johnny will be set up at the finish line Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

On June 24, Ryan Wright, your FestiVELO event director, along with his teammate, Tom Keeley, and their support crew, will be setting out on the exciting Race Across the East (RAE). This incredible race stretches over 630 miles of some of the most challenging terrain in the eastern USA. Starting from Blanchester, OH, the route takes cyclists across the Ohio River, up the Appalachian Foothills and mountains, then down through farmland in Pennsylvania and Maryland. The journey continues across the Susquehanna and Delaware Rivers, leading to the finish line on the famous Atlantic City Boardwalk, promising an adventurous and unforgettable experience.

With 39,586 feet of elevation gain, Ryan, Tom, and their crew have 55 hours to complete the course. The teams will be competing against each other and the clock in this nonstop endurance race. Ryan and Tom plan to alternate every hour and a half until they reach the finish line. The crews will be handling issues as they arise.

Completing the RAE places you among an exclusive group of cyclists who have conquered one of ultracycling’s most prestigious challenges. It’s a remarkable achievement that only a select few will ever reach.

Ryan and Tom are happily looking for one more crew member to join as our mechanic and backup driver for Ryan’s support vehicle. Both Tom and Ryan will have a main bicycle and a backup, so if the primary bike encounters a mechanical issue, the backup will be ready to step in until the primary is fixed. We’re hoping our mechanic for this trip enjoys fixing common problems like flats and broken chains, and it’s even great if they can handle more complicated repairs too!
