2% of High School athletes will receive a scholorship. 26% of women and 6% of men experience a sexual assault during college. Over 27% of all students experience a physical assault many involving alcohol. 95% of all assaults go unreported to authorities or parents. Martial arts won't help pay for college but it may help survive it. Teen and adult Krav Maga and Jiu Jitsu classes meet Monday thru Thursday at 7:30.

Peace of mind one of the great gifts our kids can give us. Their health, happiness and our peace of mind. Knowing our kids will make good decisions and believing they can keep themselves safe is the foundation of all their successes. One morning in the fall of 2023 I was getting ready to head to the school, the news was on, I was barely paying attention when something the woman said stopped me cold. A sexual assault was committed at a local university; it took place in the library in broad daylight and the perpetrator was at large. It had a chilling effect, one of our Black Belts was a freshman at the school. It’s very unlikely it’s someone you know when these things happen, but you never stop worrying and your imagination runs wild.
I stopped everything and focused on the reporting. The victim was hospitalized, and police were searching for the assailant, they had a description. 5’7” to 5’10” 18 to 21 years old 160 to 180 lbs. hair, skin, clothing etc. It was a physical assault, no weapon, a single assailant in a quiet part of the library at a time few people were there. The more she reported the more relieved I became. All I could think was, Anna would have killed that guy! He never would have known what hit him, only that he chose the wrong victim. I remember thinking thanks for all your hard work at the school and thanks for the peace of mind.
It's that time of year. The phone rings and a parent with a kid going off to college wants to sign them up for self-defense. They’re leaving in six weeks and want to know if they can check out a class. It’s never too late to start training, but it’s too late to get peace of mind. It’s tough to get your teen on the mat. There are part time jobs, the workload of AP classes and activities and sports that offer the opportunity to win trophies, competitions and championships. But the ability and the willingness to defend themselves is a life skill they do for themselves and everyone who cares about them.

Thanks for reading, thanks Anna

Hey got a minute?
I was walking through the Big Y today and a guy who works there grabbed me, he said he wanted to tell me what a great group of kids we have over here. He went on to tell me that they get a lot of young people come in on half days at school and they dread it. The place gets messed up, things don't paid for and there's a lack of respect for the people working there. He's said there is nothing they can really do but clean up after them and do it again the next half day. He's been working there as long as I can remember and through the years he's seen dozens of Impact kids come over to pick up pizza, ice cream etc. for the school and they're are always friendly, polite and respectful "great kids". Ofcourse no one needs to remind me what great kids have come through here in the last 20 years but its always nice to hear. I thought you'd like to hear it too.
Thanks very much!

The 2022 IMA Push-Up Challenge
On Sunday December 4th we’ll be holding our 15th annual Push-Up Challenge. Since its inception In 2008 as an effort to restock the Walpole Food Pantry during the Great Recession The Push-Up Challenge has helped dozens of local families experiencing hardship.
This years Challenge takes on a special meaning as we’re doing our push-ups in support of Mr. Jackson.
As many of you know Andre fell ill in May of 2022 and hasn’t been able to return to the school. What most don’t know is the severity of his illness. Andre contracted a dangerous infection that did not respond well to antibiotics. Were it not for the fast action of some concerned Impact families and the great care he received at Mass General he wouldn’t be here today. The infection spread through his body resulting in numerous surgeries to remove affected areas. He’s healing now but the results of the procedures will take months to heal and will affect his ability to live without assistance.
As you know, Mr. Jackson is as private as he is kind and being the recipient of any help from others is the last place he ever intended to be. We don’t know exactly what the future holds or what the long-term needs will be, we only know for sure that some assistance will make a big difference in the near future.
Andre always poured himself into the Push-Up Challenge. He was always overwhelmed by the amount of effort and kindness he saw from our students. The helpfulness the funds provided were immeasurable. Many people have asked me over the last six months what they could do for Andre. Not having an answer or a way to show our appreciation for all he means to us has been frustrating. If you would like to help, please consider:
• Joining the Push-Up Challenge: Do 10 minutes or a full day of Push-Ups for someone who can’t.
• Sponsor one of our Amazing Students: 1 penny per Push-Up is all it takes.
• Contribute to the IMA Push-Up Challenge GoFundMe. https://gofund.me/053373d8
• Spread the word, he’s made an Impact on a lot of people the last 20 years.
• Write him a note and drop it off at the School. The highlight of his day is hearing how all his friends and students are doing while he’s away.
Thank you for your time and support and thank you for being part of Impact.

Hey Impact Martial Arts
I asked Mr. Jackson if he could write up quick update on how he's doing so I could put it in the newsletter. Instead I got something called Naked Hotdogs don't worry its SFW.

Naked Hotdogs

Mr. Jackson was confronted recently during his medical recuperation stay by a lunch plate that consisted of two hotdogs in buns. Nothing else. Two naked hotdogs. At the very least Mr. Jackson would have expected a smathering of spicy or even plain mustard. Ketchup would be disdained but nonetheless acceptable. So, he called Mr. Lynch to complain wondering should he pull downhis Johnny gown properly and perform a few standard front kicks on the cook staff. Mr. Lynch dissuaded Mr. Jackson and informed him that such actions might hike that frilly and frail accoutrement above his ashy and knobby knees. Instead he suggested that Mr.Jackson give an update on his absence from Impact Martial Arts whilst he searched his cupboards for mustard and his sewing basket for a zipper for that Johnny gown.

Students, parents and avid readers! This is Mr. Jackson.I am recuperating from some medical conditions that had me in the hospital and now in a rehabilitation facility in Marlborough. Accordingly to the doctors and Mr. Lynch, who visits weekly, I’m healing very well. I spend my days watching illuminating television. “That price ain’t right, girl! Go $199 lower.” Naturally, I’m listening to my WhitneyHouston playlist so that I can keep my vocal chops on par. For inspiration and needed funkiness I’m also listening to His Royal Badness’ Prince song, “Feel Better, Feel Good, Feel Wonderfut”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orDJf_Q-xk4

Thank you for cards and well wishes. I hope to be back at the front desk soon. Until then, keep punching, keep kicking, keep being polite because that’s what karate students do. If you wish to send me an email, you can do so at [email protected].

Looking for mustard,

Mr. Jackson

Got a minute? Please read.

I had a kind of anniversary recently and a conversation with my Jiu Jitsu coach that really got me thinking. I thought it made sense to put it out there to the Impact community. I was in class a while back and my coach told me a new guy signed up to train which isn’t unusual but the reason, he was telling me was because the new student, an adult in his 30’s, said he sat in the parking lot for 45 minutes before coming in to check out the academy. Just to be clear, he wasn’t attending his first class, he was just coming in to ask some questions and check the place out. I told my coach, it wasn’t the first time he came here, but the first time he came in.
The hardest thing you’ll ever do in martial arts, at Impact or any other serious martial arts gym, is earn your Black Belt. The second hardest thing you’ll ever do, particularly if you’re an adult, is take your first class. There’s something about trying something new that gets more and more difficult as we age. However, if I had a dollar for every time someone told me they wished they had trained or earned the Black Belt they started working towards when they were younger, I’d be able to buy Mr. Jackson that Jet Ski he’s always wanted. Bottom line is this, we all have things we want to try, learn or achieve but often times something stops us from getting started, for some reason the first step is the hardest.

Back in the 1990’s, you read that right, I wrote down some goals on the morning of New Year’s Day. The usuals were there, weight loss, financial this or that, read more yada, yada. But I also wrote down “take a martial arts class” I fooled around with it when I was younger, never seriously, but I always wanted to try it. Simple right? Make a phone call, stop into a school, sign up, try it out join or not. No big deal. Of course, it didn’t happen. There were schools near my home and work, but I didn’t go in, only drove by saying, next week. Finally, on a Tuesday, February 3rd, a new Martial Arts school was opening a mile from my house. The lights were on as I was driving home from work and a guy inside was painting. I stopped and introduced myself. After a long conversation the instructor asked if I was ready to try it out, I said yes, he said when, I said when is class? he said when ever you come back, you’re my first student. I started that Thursday night with another guy who signed up and ended becoming a very good friend. A short time later, a tall friendly guy named Andre joined and the rest is history.

Fast forward to 2022. I never saw this coming, never even considered it a possibility. I absolutely fell in love with martial arts. I have two black belts and I’m working on a third but the thing that makes me happiest is that I provide for my family doing what I most enjoy. I tell my daughters (and anyone else that would listen) if you had a day that you could do anything you wanted what would you do? Then I say, “can you make that your job?”. Walking into that Karate school on Tuesday February 3rd in 1990 something set that in motion for me.

If you’ve read this far thanks but give me another minute. Whatever is on your “do it” or “try it” list please, please, please get out there and give it a shot! Oder that guitar on Amazon, take that surfing class on Groupon, ride a motorcycle, try Babel. Just Do It! (90’s reference). You might find your passion; you might just change the arc of your life. At least you can cross it of you list.
If you’ve ever thought about trying martial arts please do, the benefits are amazing. Some of the best Black Belts I know waited for years to get started and like me, can’t believe they didn’t start earlier.

Impact’s Adult program is filled with great people but there’s always room for more!

Thanks for your time
Patrick Lynch

I ran into a parent of a former student the other day. His daughter was a very good student, she worked hard, knew her curriculum and was a pleasure to have in class. At some point, she stopped training, if memory serves me right, she was a red belt, maybe brown when she stopped. He thanked me for “all we did” training his daughter in self defense but he was disappointed that she quit and didn’t earn a black belt. She just got too busy with other commitments. Preparing her resume for college was a high priority.

It’s a not an unusual conversation to have with parents but it got me thinking. My children are adults now, they are on their own. They earned their junior black belt in their teens and continued training in self-defense during high school. They didn’t always want to but I insisted. It was the best thing I ever did for them.

There comes a time when you will drop your child off at a campus maybe thousands of miles away. Or, you’ll watch them walk through security at Logan as they set out on a year long adventure on the other side of the globe. I’ve been in both of those situations, multiple times, and at that moment when you realize you can’t help them or protect them anymore your thoughts can be terrifying.

As I was driving away from campus or leaving the airport I never thought about the things that seemed so important when they were preparing for this moment. I wasn’t thankful or relieved that they excelled at volleyball or soccer or that they participated in student council. The AP classes they took didn’t save me any tuition money and the money they earned at part time jobs mostly went to Starbucks or the gas station. The only thing that gave me comfort was that they had spent years training to protect themselves.

I’ll never stop worrying about my kids safety, I’ll never sleep well when they are somewhere other then their bedrooms in my home. I don’t believe they can stand face to face with a grown man and expect to beat him in a fight. I do know that they have an awareness and understanding that the world is an amazing place filled with good and terrible people and some may mean you harm. I know they can throw a punch, a kick, an eye gauge. I know they understand that there are places, people and situations to avoid. I know they have a fighting chance.

This isn’t an advertisement for martial arts training it’s more a reflection on raising our kids to be healthy, happy and safe. If we can accomplish that, the opportunities are limitless. Please teach your kids to be safe.

Thanks for reading.

This is Liliana. Liliana is 11 years old and trains in Krav Maga at Impact Martial Arts in Walpole. Statistics tell us Liliana is unlikely to have to throw a dozen elbows at the head of a 6 foot 190 lbs man to keep herself safe. Statistics also tell us that in the time it took to watch this video a young girl somewhere was assaulted. Lets hope she had the willingness and ability to defend herself like Liliana does. We can't turn a young person into Liliana overnight but we all start at the beginning. Impact is currently offer a new student special, $19.99 for a month of classes ages 3 to Adult. It could be the best 20 bucks you ever spent.

In September 2007 Olivia Titus joined our Little Dragons class. Years later she earned her Junior Black Belt. Olivia continued training all these years culminating in a First Degree Black Belt earned on Saturday, July 24th. That alone is huge feat it's only the second time its happened here in two decades but that's only part of Olivia's story. Olivia often trained with people twice her age and oftentimes twice her size, she refused to get pushed around or intimidated. When she got to a time in life when other responsibilities and interests demanded her time she continued to train consistently. Olivia was an excellent student in High School, played varsity sports held a job. Her path to black belt was nearly derailed by a horrific gymnastics injury, a knee reconstruction and years of rehab also, Covid closed the school and limited how we were allowed to train. Through it all she never complained, never expected to be given anything and never wanted anything but an opportunity which we couldn't promise due to the pandemic and her knee's ability to withstand a 10-12 hour test that eventually breaks us all. We've always been very proud of the long line of tough, confident and capable young women who have trained at Impact, Olivia is as tough as anyone I've ever met. She'll be headed off to Baylor University in a couple weeks to continue on her path to success but before that she'll be back on the mat this week with her bumps, bruises, and her black belt training as hard as she ever has! Thank You Olivia! I wish I had 100 more just like you!
