Wallowa's hoop season is over, and so is my content creatorship of the Superfans page. I started watching the Cougar girls when I discovered the overlap with the school's Rotary-sponsored Interact Club when I was the club's Rotary adviser.

It has been a joy capturing these athletes for the past eight years as they moved through their prep basketball careers, unknowingly acknowledging the wisdom of the legislators who in 1972 had the audacity to enact Title IX, declaring girls and women worthy of the same athletic benefits as boys and men. Thanks to all who followed along with me through Facebook.

Don't fret about me, though. I'll still have season tickets for EOU women's hoops, my other favorite team. Mount up!

Our Cougar girls closed out the season with two hard-fought games but ended up on the short end of both final scores. It was Powder Valley 53, Wallowa 38 Saturday, Feb. 15, and No. 1 Union 65, Wallowa 21 on Friday, Feb. 14.

Our final season record is 6-15, 1-9 in Old Oregon League play.

Pine Eagle squeezed out a 44-43 win over our Cougar girls Saturday, Feb. 8. Wallowa led most of the contest, but the Spartans tied it at 43-43 in the last minute of play, and a free throw made the difference.

We now stand at 6-13, 1-7 in league play.

Next up: We host Union (19-1, 8-0 league, and No. 1 in the state among 1A schools) at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14. A victory would be monumental.

No. 12 Elgin found a surprising opponent in our No. 35 Wallowa girls Thursday, Feb. 6. Down 18-6 after one quarter, the Cougars steadily and defiantly clawed themselves back to a one-point deficit, 35-34, with 3:28 left to play. Despite leaving it all on the court, Wallowa was on the losing end of a 40-37 final score.

Next up: We host Pine Eagle at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8.

A hot-shooting Joseph squad avenged a loss earlier in the season by overpowering our Wallowa girls, 42-29, Friday, Jan. 31. The Cougars had won the Jan. 16 contest 36-30.

Our season record dropped to 6-11 (1-5 in Old Oregon League play).

Next up: four home games, the first against Elgin (15-4, 4-3 league) at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6.

As our Wallowa girls head to Joseph for a 6 p.m. game Friday, Jan. 31, we have a chance to move up in Old Oregon League standings if we can beat some higher-ranked teams.

Best chances are against Joseph, Powder Valley and Pine Eagle, all clustered with the Cougars in the rankings.

Wallowa (6-10. 1-4 league) is ranked No. 11. Joseph (7-10, 1-4 league) is No. 10 although we beat the Eagles 36-30 earlier.

Of the other teams on the schedule, Powder Valley (9-8, 4-1 league) is No. 8, Elgin (14-3, 3-2 league) is No. 5, Pine Eagle (8-8, 1-4 League) is No. 9 and Union sits atop the league at 16-1 (5-0 league).

Host Pine Eagle prevailed over our Wallowa girls today, Jan. 25. The score was 47-38 in a game marked by a plethora of fouls and missed shots.

Our season record now stands at 6-10, 1-4 league.

Next up: We take a short trip to Joseph for a 6 p.m. game Thursday, Jan. 30.

Our Cougar girls dropped a game to Union, probably the toughest opponent we'll have this season, 60-20, on the Bobcats' court tonight, Jan. 23.

Union extended its season record to 15-1, while Wallowa now stands at 6-9.

Next up: We travel to Pine Eagle for a 4 p.m. game Saturday, Jan. 25.

It will take all the determination our Wallowa girls can muster when they travel to Union today, Jan. 23, for a 6 p.m. contest.

With a 14-1 (3-0 league) record, Union tops the Old Oregon League and is ranked No. 1 among the state's 96 1A schools. The Cougars are 6-8 (1-2 league) and ranked No. 32.

High-flying teams sometimes look past a seemingly easy game. A boisterous cheering section would help our girls.

Tough defense, especially when it came to rebounding, held off Joseph in a 35-30 Wallowa victory Thursday, Jan 16. The win gives the Cougars a 6-7 season record, 1-1 in Old Oregon League play.

Next up: We travel today to challenge high-flying Elgin (11-2, 1-1 in league play). The Huskies' win streak of six ended Thursday in a 55-23 bruising at the hands of No. 1-ranked Union.
