Quannapowitt Yacht Club

Quannapowitt Yacht Club Quannapowitt is the oldest inland boat club in America, founded in 1880. Take exit 39 south off Rt. 128 to Wakefield. See fleet listings for more information.

We are a family oriented boat club whose mission is to keep sailing costs low and enjoyable. The Quannapowitt Yacht Club (QYC) in Wakefield has available membership openings for sailors and those interested in learning. We’re located at the end of Linda Road, the flashing light on North Avenue. We have a modern club house, plenty of space on our rigging docks, a large safe anchorage, club sailboat

s, dinghies and a canoe for you to use. Lake Quannapowitt is a great size lake to learn to sail on and a big enough venue for regional regattas. We get a refreshing cool lake breeze many afternoons during the summer. You can always find members relaxing on one of our lakeside decks enjoying the view, or enjoying a game of ping pong inside the clubhouse! QYC has races for mixed fleets on Wednesdays and Sundays and occasional regattas, starting in May and continuing through October. The racing is competitive, but fun with lots of room for beginners to learn and experienced racers to sharpen their skills. Our racing skippers range in age from 15 to 80. QYC sanctioned fleets are the Laser, Daysailer, Flying Scot, Cape Cod Mercury, and 420s with a small fleet of mixed types. Our fleets are relatively inexpensive and usually race “one-design.” Power boats owned by QYC provide a platform for running sailing activities and for “rescue” should you capsize. The club owns Lasers, Cape Cod Mercurys, Daysailers and 420’s for use by qualified members. In addition, Optimist dinghies are available for qualified children sailors. In addition to sailing memberships, QYC also offers paddle memberships for canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddle boards.

Save the date! QYC members are invited for a night sail on Lake Quannapowitt on Saturday, September 6, 2025, 7-10 pm (rain date Sunday, September 7th).

There will be glowing lanterns floating on the water for members to collect as they race each other around the lake. We'll have snacks, glow sticks, and - weather permitting - a nearly full moon and stars reflecting beautifully on Lake Q!

We are excited to bring this family-friendly tradition back to QYC this season! Rig up your boats, wear your best glow bracelets, and come join us as we cap off the summer by lighting up the night!

Make sure to bring flashlights (or headlamps), bug spray, and lifejackets!

Quannapowitt Yacht Club offers a 5-week sailing program designed to give students the basics of sailing in a fun, supportive and safe environment. The program is limited to 12 students, to ensure each student receives plenty of one-on-one guidance on the water. Each weekly session is two hours long, with a maximum of two students per boat (420) or 4 students per boat (Mercury/Daysailer).

Throughout the five week program, members of QYC's Instructor staff will cover the fundamentals of sailing including: Points of sail and important terminology, parts of the boat & rigging, tacking and jibing, basic navigation and sail shape control, pulling away from and returning to the dock.

You can Register for the course here: https://sailqyc.com/event/2025-adult-learn-to-sail.

This is the perfect experience for beginner sailors who want to see if sailing is right for them, or simply try a new activity and learn a new skill. Our Learn to Sail course is taught on a variety of boats that may include Mercurys, 420s, and Day Sailers. Lessons are recommended for ages 15 and up. Younger sailors may participate in the program with a parent.

2025 Schedule:
Monday evenings, 6:00pm - 8:00pm
July 14, July 21, July 28, August 4, August 11
Rain/Weather Dates will be on Thursdays, from 6-8PM. If the class needs to be cancelled on Monday, students will be informed by QYC Staff. No make-up sessions are offered other than regularly scheduled Monday sessions which are cancelled by QYC due to inclement or unsuitable weather.

$500 member rate
$600 non-member rate

Even though a thick layer of ice remains on the lake, the clubhouse is being made ready for another season of fun for all. A mild winter day lent itself beautifully for some outdoor cleanup and indoor spring cleaning in preparation for the Commodore's Banquet.
