When you take the DIY approach to burnout recovery, here’s what usually happens:

A) You try every solution in the book and start to feel like self-care is another job that you’re failing at.

b) You inadvertently focus on solving the wrong problem.

Example: many women perceive sinking productivity or a lack of work-life balance as technical problems requiring more effective time management or organization, rather than symptoms of a broader and deeper problem: burnout, extreme energy depletion, and nervous system dysregulation.

c) You cobble together piecemeal solutions- a yoga class here, a retreat there.

Kind of like you’re throwing spaghetti at the wall and seeing what sticks, instead of addressing burnout with a holistic approach that accounts for the mind-body-spirit problem it really is.

Bottom line: most people cannot overcome burnout on their own. Healing requires support and human connection.

The hard part about burnout recovery?

It’s often longer than you think and it CAN be “hard” because it requires leaning into a new type of discomfort (that you’ve probably been avoiding)

The good part? It can be FUN! Exciting. Adventurous. And empowering.

Change is hard. Staying the same is also hard. I know what I’d choose.

Burnout recovery has no timeline. You “fixing” yourself has no timeline.

(And btw you don’t need to be fixed, you aren’t broken)

It’s just the journey of life- but a journey where you become more INTENTIONAL with all your choices.

A journey where you’re always evolving as a human, whether you like it or not.

There’s no endpoint to that. So go easy💕

I was looking thru a bunch of photos on my old laptop today.

The ones from Guatemala - where I did most of my PhD research- made me feel wistful, nostalgic. I really miss that place. It felt like a second home. I had so many amazing adventures and happy times there.

But when I see my pics from Bolivia?

I feel a combo of numb and regret that I forced myself to spend 4 months there, unhappy pretty much the whole time.

It was a lesson I needed to learn: doing something you hate in order to meet others’ expectations (real or imagined) will usually end badly. In burnout or worse.

I never published any of my work from Bolivia. Might as well have spent the entire time hanging out in Peru having fun!

I still have my adventurous spirit. Love learning, exploring traveling. But I’m doing it for me only now.

Put this to work⤵️

First thing in the morning when you get to your desk:

1) Decide what needs to get done today (choose 1-3 needle movers). What sort of tasks are these? What kind of energy and focus do they require?

2) Assess your state: how is your energy? Your mental focus? Your emotional energy?

3) Decide: what environment is going to bring out the best in you? (If you’re not sure, start experimenting and building self-awareness).

Want more productivity ideas? I’ve got a few you prob haven’t thought of.

*Comment or DM me “work” and I’ll send you my blog post where I break them all down.

There’s a popular myth floating around: if you’re burnt out, take a vacation!

(Hence this cringe photo of me learning to surf in Bali, circa June 2016).

I thought I’d go there, come back, and everything would be fresh and new.

Ummm…. Nope.

When you’re burnt out, a vacation almost never works the way we hope it will.

Often, it reveals just how depleted you really are.

It’s so easy to buy into this idea that all we need is time off. Time away.

➡️But taking a vacation for burnout is like putting a bandaid on a bullet wound.

Over on my blog, I did a deep dive into this myth, unpacked why vacations never work - and offered suggestions of what to do instead to finally get unstuck from burnout.

⭐️DM me the word “VACAY” and I’ll send you over the link to read.

Thinking about coming to Somatic Breathwork Sunday? We still have a few spots left!

In case you're wondering: THIS IS NOT MEDITATION.

You won't lie there squirming and beating yourself up for not being able to turn your brain off. None of that.

It's more like a trippy journey where you use your breath to enter a state of altered consciousness, allowing you to release stress that you didn't even know you were holding onto, let go of mindsets that have been keeping you stuck, and connect to how you really want to feel every day in your life.

PS: this session is being held at DRIFT in Wakefield, RI. Sunday May 31st from 4-6pm.

What do you want?

Such a simple question, but too often we don't know the answer.

I guided a Somatic Breathwork Journey a few days ago, and one thing this breathwork is really good for is giving you clarity about what you truly want and need - and motivating you to make it happen.

Because chances are, you've been pushing aside your own wants and needs for years.

Focusing on what you think you SHOULD want rather than the truth that lives inside you.

In that session I led last week, my client fell asleep (even though the music was upbeat and loud!)

Her big takeaways: She'd been pushing herself too hard. Her body needed rest. Less doing. And it's ok for her to give herself permission to take that rest.

Curious what insights might come up for you in a Somatic Breathwork Journey? Then come join my next session at DRIFT in Wakefield, RI, Sunday May 31, 4-6pm.

PS: This is NOT meditation. If you struggle with meditation but wish you could reap the benefits meditation provides, give this a try.
