Nice writeup on Bikeverywhere Founder Emeritus Doug Shidell in the Strib today:

Doug Shidell has ridden upward of 57,000 miles in the service of his comprehensive Twin Cities Bike Map. He just sold the business, but his spirit for exploration still fires.

It's time to move on. Bikeverywhere started as Little Transport Press in 1984 with the publication of "Metro Area Roads and Bike Trails." It's been a great 37 year ride, but it's time to retire.

My plan is to keep the Twin Cities Bike Map current for up to a year while trying to sell the business. If you know anyone who is interested in taking Bikeverywhere to the next level, please contact me.

Happy trails and thanks for coming along for the ride.

A new paved trail in Carver Park Reserve now allows bicyclists to enter and exit the park from the north side. Previously, the only access from the north side was on Hwy 11, a narrow, high speed road with traffic. The trail connects up to a system of neighborhood trails north of Hwy 7 and allows riders to ride from Carver Park Reserve to Lake Minnetonka Regional Park and points north. The new route will appear in the spring 2022 update on Avenza Maps.

Iohan Gueorguiev, “The Bike Wanderer,” chronicled six years of bike wanderings, from the Arctic Circle to the southern tip of Argentina, on his YouTube channel. My wife and I watched every one of his videos until COVID ended his travels and restricted him to living in his home country of Canada. He was Buddha like in his outlook, couldn’t pass a horse or stray dog without petting it, traveled overgrown trails, icy arctic roads and remote mountain passes. In one episode he loaded his bike on a fold-able kayak and paddled across a bay dotted with giant icebergs. He treated it all as one big adventure, but there were parts of the adventure that seemed death defying and I could only watch because I knew he had lived through it to edit and post the video.
Iohan died on August 19 at age 33. He battled depression and suffered chronic sleep apnea and perpetual sleep deprivation. He took his own life.

The world has lost a gentle wanderer who inspired thousands to try bike travel. I’ve never felt so sad about the death of someone I’ve never met in person. RIP Iohan.

Many trail updates courtesy of Dave Olson, who has been sending regular updates to me all summer. I've been doing road research and can report that every road in the metro has been checked within the last two years.

This may be the most up to date version of the map in the last decade.

A new trail now allows cyclists to ride to the entrance of the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum from the west. By fall, the trail will also allow access from the east. Bicyclists and walkers still have to pay a $12.50 entry fee to get into the arboretum and schedule an appointment.

Back in the Cities and doing bike route research again. It took about a week to get back on the bike and about three weeks to feel fully recovered.

This little cemetery in Newport is just off Hwy 61 and just south of Bailey Road. I had no idea it was there until I decided to check out the little green rectangle on the map. It worked well as a jumping off spot.

Military Road has been a reliable connector to get into the Cottage Grove countryside, but things are changing. The road dead ends about half a mile before Woodbury Drive, then turns into a bike path. It's a good path, but the land around it is rapidly developing into suburban cul de sacs. Overall, this area has become an auto centric development with bike trails along major roads. Not my favorite area for bike riding.
