In memory of Berto 💙 — over the next few posts we’ll be highlighting some of this weekend’s championship teams with a special connection to him, including teams he used to coach and coaches that had a special connection to him, much more than just a fellow coach or acquaintance. Here’s the first one. 🏆

 🏆 BERTO MEMORIAL CLASSIC — 18U CHAMPIONSHIP 🏆
You couldn’t script a better ending than this one…
Two of Berto’s own teams — Lopez Elite National Scout and 254 Baseball Lopez — squared off for the championship of the tournament that carries his name. Two programs he poured his heart into, going head-to-head for the title. What a beautiful thing.
As if that wasn’t good enough, both sides shook hands and agreed to settle the whole thing with three innings of banana ball. Because nothing honors a legend quite like unhinged baseball lol but most importantly the boys he loved and cared deeply for, having fun on a field he spent so much time on. At one point the coaches even joined in and got into the game too. Nothing says “I’m just here to manage the roster” like sprinting out mid-championship to play third base. By the final inning, it all came down to one pitcher, one catcher, one batter, and everybody else just watching like it was the World Series.
When the chaos finally settled, Lopez Elite National Scout walked away champions, with 254 Baseball Lopez putting up one heck of a fight as finalists🥈
Since Berto couldn’t be out there himself, these guys stepped in to run his teams for him — no pressure, right?
⚾ Terry McCutcheon & Edwin “Skip” Johnson — 254 Baseball
⚾ Adam Lemaster & Ian Young — Lopez Elite National, plus late reinforcements Kaleb Kurtz, AJ Bell, and Scott Beheler, who showed up like the cavalry.
Big shoutout to Michael Shubert and Richard Chouinard, who came out just to watch grown men play banana ball in Berto’s honor — true fans.
I’ve heard Berto say it a thousand time “I don’t care where they play, with me or if they feel another team is best.. I just want them on the field playing.” Although this may not have been the time of “playing” he meant. I have no doubt that he would have loved every second of it and would have been out there showing them he still had it.
