This is a different kind of Throwback Thursday: In 2018, we had the opportunity to lead REFIT in a women’s prison, and all these years later— I still have a hard time putting into words what that experience did to me.

In that experience, there was a tension that was hard to reconcile. I loved being with these women, and for that little window of time, the space was absolutely FULL of joy. But underneath all of it was the awareness that when our time together was over, we were going to walk out the doors — and they weren’t.

These were also women whose choices and circumstances had led to very real consequences, including the loss of freedoms most of us rarely stop to appreciate. I don’t want to minimize that reality or somehow turn incarceration into a beautiful story, because it isn’t. It was gut-wrenching to connect with these women. To see so much humanity in each of them and know the boundaries of the lives they were living caused pain for so many people.

What I wasn’t expecting though, was the amount of JOY they carried in spite of their circumstance.

I remember being struck by the fact that women with so little freedom were somehow accessing a kind of joy that many of us struggle to find in our own lives.

I don’t know that we left those women with anything nearly as significant as what they left with me, but 8 years later, this remains one of the most deeply meaningful and life-changing experiences I’ve ever been part of.

I still think about them. I wonder where some of them are today and remember what it felt like to watch joy show up in a place where I least expected to find it.

This is what I love so much about REFIT. It takes me places where love overshadows fear and gives me an opportunity to connect with humanity in ways I would never have imagined. ❤️
