Lerma's Waco Boxing Club

Lerma's Waco Boxing Club Home of Head Coach & Texas Boxing Hall of Famer Jaime"El Torito" Lerma Gilbert "Cuate" Sanchez started Waco Boxing Club in 1972. Thank you and God Bless.

Cuate's brothers, along with John Garcia, the late Jose Lerma Sr, and the late, Jerry Guffey, Sr. helped to mentor and coach many boxers for several years. My name is Jaime Lerma and I have been a part of this legacy Since 1978, competed as an amateur for 13 years, won numerous Regional and State USA/ABF and Golden Gloves titles, and fought and traveled with the USA Boxing Team, along with Chris

Byrd, Tim Austin, Ronald "Winky" Wright, Ivan "Mighty" Robinson, Shane Mosley and Oscar De La Hoya, to name a few. I turned professional in 1991 and won the WBF Welterweight World Title in 1996 and retired as a professional in 1999 and I am currently a 2016 Texas Sports Hall of Fame nominee.I stepped away from boxing for several years, but came back to continue the legacy my Trainer, father and mentors started and will run it the way they did. My goal is to not only teach boxing, but discipline and self respect and give back to the children of this community. NO child that wants to be a member of the Waco Boxing Club will be turned away for financial inability. I want to GIVE the same opportunities to the members of this gym that were given to me as a child and to honor the man who taught me how to be a fighter and Champion. I welcome the community and my friends to join me in this. Also, a huge thank you to Coach Tony Montoya and Coach John Garcia for your years of dedication to the gym and members. If anyone is interested in making donations or volunteering your time, please contact Coach Jaime Lerma.

He was a prodigy from Philadelphia, a kid who moved like he was born to fight. Meldrick Taylor won Olympic gold at seventeen and turned professional with the kind of speed that made opponents look frozen. By twenty three he was a world champion, unbeaten, confident, and already being called the future of boxing.

In March 1990 he faced Julio Cesar Chavez, the undefeated Mexican with eighty nine wins and a reputation for breaking men down. For twelve rounds Taylor boxed beautifully. He was faster, sharper, and outscored Chavez in nearly every exchange. But every time he landed three, Chavez landed one that hurt. By the final round Taylor was far ahead on points but his body was failing him.

With just seconds left, Chavez landed a right hand that dropped him. Taylor got up at the count of six, swaying but conscious. The referee looked into his eyes and stopped the fight. The clock showed two seconds left. Taylor had been two seconds away from beating one of the greatest fighters in history.

He was never the same. The punishment from that night changed him. The speed faded, his reflexes dulled, and the confidence that once defined him vanished. He fought on, chasing what he lost, but it never came back. Years later, when people saw him, they still talked about Chavez, about the fight that took everything and left him chasing ghosts.

Meldrick Taylor’s story is one of brilliance and heartbreak, a reminder that in boxing, everything can change in a single night. One punch, one moment, and a fighter’s life can split in two, before and after. That is the cruel beauty of this sport, the same drama that breaks men is the reason we cannot look away.

August 8, 1982. A line drive foul ball hits a four year old boy in the head at Fenway. Jim Rice, realizing in a flash that it would take EMTs too long to arrive and cut through the crowd, sprang from the dugout and scooped up the boy. He laid the boy gently on the dugout floor, where the Red Sox medical team began to treat him.
When the boy arrived at the hospital 30 minutes later, doctors said, without a doubt that Jim's prompt actions saved the boy's life. Jim returned to the game in a blood-stained uniform. A real badge of courage. After visiting the boy in the hospital, and realizing the family was of modest means, he stopped by the business office and instructed that the bill be sent to him.
This is what a sports Hero looks like!

Despite a rough amateur start, Rocky Marciano went on to finish his pro career a perfect 49-0, defending the heavyweight title 6 times and becoming the only heavyweight champion in history to retire undefeated 🏆
