It’s that time of year! You can hang on to expired flares, but the USCG has found that they can be unreliable, so you need to stay current.

You CAN NOT throw expired flares in the trash. If you can’t make it to one of these events, you can dispose of expired flares at your local fire station and some hazardous waste dumps.

This is a very sad situation, but underscores the value of always wearing a PFD. The two survivors were both wearing PFDs.

Authorities say the two people who survived Saturday’s boat capsize on Lake Tahoe which killed eight others were wearing lifejackets.

The eight who died drowned, including six quickly found near the 27 foot boat which had only been taken out twice. The other two victims were later found at depths of about 300 feet.

The victims were Paula Bozinovich, 71, who was reportedly celebrating her birthday and her husband, Terry Pickles, 73, both from Redwood City, California; Joshua Antony Pickles, 37, their son, from San Francisco, California, a DoorDash executive who owned the boat; Peter Bayes, 72, from Lincoln, California; Timothy O’Leary, 71, from Auburn, California; Theresa Giullari, 66, and James Guck, 69, both from Honeoye, New York; and Stephen Lindsay, 63, from Springwater, New York.

Officials recommend wearing lifejackets at all times when out on a boat on Lake Tahoe, as well as taking a boating education course. If a storm hits, it’s best to move toward the shoreline as quickly as possible. If thrown overboard, staying calm in the water and controlling breathing is essential.

Boat Trailers! It's an excellent idea to go ahead and pack some bearings to carry with you on the road. Pack them with the proper grease then vaccum seal & throw in the boat or truck. It's also a good idea to carry a hub with axel hardware, ie: axel nuts, seals, & cotter pins. This could save you thousands on an afterhours/weekend flatbed tow.
