As I approach 60, some people feel like they need to tell me to slow down and not train so hard. I disagree, because I've been hearing this nonsense since I was 45 or so. Some say the only reason I am still as active and look the way I do, is because I never stopped working out since I was a teenager. More nonsense. I have had many guys over 40 years-old on these mats. This guy Jon, in the video, is now around 66 years-old and had great cardio, even compared to someone in their 30s. At the time of this video (6 years ago) he was training twice a week for about a year or so, and although he wasn't rolling (sparring) very intensely, he still had some solid skills for his age. I am confident he would hold his own against a guy much younger if he had to in a self defense situation.

Don't let your age hold you back from achieving fitness and self defense skills that nobody can take away from you. And training jiu-jitsu will give you much more than self defense skills and much improved levels of fitness. The friends you will make, the camaraderie, and all the intangibles like much improved self-esteem, and feeling half your age, are the things money can't buy-you're going to have to show up, get on the mat, and work hard for it. But it's all worth it.

We have a new black belt in the house. Congrats to Jason Sorensen for his huge achievement. Now he has a BJj black belt to add to his judo black belt.
🔥🔥🔥On average the journey is about 10 years for most people. Jason was already a purple belt when he started training with us back in 2018.

Big shout out to all the others that were promoted as well. My son Matisse received his purple belt today as did Jonah, another San Marcos Knights alumni wrestler.

Ran into one my former students at the JJWL in Del Mar. My son Matisse on the far left, was barely up to Esteban’s shoulder last time they saw each other-maybe 10 years ago. Always great to see old friends.

June 2023 promotions. A couple of new purple and blue belts will now be on the mats.
