Katalyst Kombatives

Katalyst Kombatives Katalyst Kombatives is the premier adult only self-defense oriented gym in Virginia Beach. New students start with a $20 Intro Experience.

Katalyst Kombatives is a modern Krav Maga and self-defense gym in Virginia Beach, Virginia, led by owner and head instructor David Bergman. We train adults only, from total beginners to experienced martial artists, in practical civilian self-defense built for real situations rather than sport or competition. Classes cover striking, escapes, weapon defense, and situational awareness. Every techniqu

e gets tested against live resistance, so you find out what actually holds up under pressure instead of taking someone's word for it. It's money-back, and it credits toward membership. Serving Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, and the surrounding Hampton Roads area.

Repetition builds reaction. True or false?

David gives it a six. Here's why the number splits.
Reps in front of a mirror: that's a 1. It doesn't build fight skill.
Reps under pressure against a live opponent who is making decisions: that's a 10.
Same word, repetition. Completely different results.

How well does the head coach do against a stick? 50/50.

Sometimes great. Sometimes not so great.
This is about tactics and decision-making a whole lot more than techniques.
Make the wrong read, pay the penalty.
That's why it's best to not get into fights with people holding sticks or knives. But sometimes it's unavoidable.
And that's why we train like this.

Bumping out of a clinch is the wrong answer.

You break contact and now you are standing in front of free swinging hands. Or a free shooting weapon you never saw.

So we drill the opposite. Asia works to connect her hands. My only job is to stop that from happening without separating.

If she connects, we switch. Now I am the one underneath.

Slow and cooperative first. The speed comes later.

If the choke drill feels easy, it's fake.

A loose grip on the neck isn't a choke. It's a hug, and you can escape it any way you want.
So you end up building escapes that fall apart the second someone means it.
A real one connects high, up under the chin, and lifts.
That's what exposes the throat, and that's the grip you have to train against.
Then you pluck, pull it off, and move around to the side.

Train it for real. Katalyst Kombatives, Virginia Beach.

RJ is in a helmet because David wants to be able to stab him in the face.

The training knife confirms every hit. It beeps and lights up when the tip lands.
No arguing about whether the defense worked. The knife tells you.
Fast stabs, fast retractions, live resistance from a partner who is actually trying to land.
This is what honest knife training looks like.

Putting them on their hips means nothing if they pop back up before you do.

The only purpose of making them fall is buying time to get back to your feet.
It's not to point and say haha, they made you fall.
You have to get up quicker than they do. That means following up immediately, with you standing.
Falling them isn't the win. Standing is.

One rule: two hands on the stick.

Andrew can swing it, slash it, or pitchfork with it. Any way he wants, as long as both hands stay on it.
David's goal: connect to the stick arm and not get hit.
Andrew's goal: hit him.
There will be failure. That's the point. Training drills should show you where your limits are.

The gym as it looks right now.

The old tour video was shot in a different building. It sat up there too long.

This is the room you'd walk into.

Twenty-odd years and I don't consider myself a Master or Professor just a fellow learner.

I tell students my own black belt proves nothing. It's a time gate, not a skill gate.

What I have is a room of adults who act while they're still afraid.

We don't build confidence. Confidence claims an assurance that doesn't exist.

We build courage.

Ask me anything about the training. I'll answer straight.

Most people drop their hands after they punch.

After you throw, your hand comes back to your face. Every time. No exceptions. Dropping it gives them a free shot at your head. Beginners, just focus on getting the combo done. Once you have the mechanics, then start obsessing over the details. We're talking hands not even 3 inches off your face.

Live resistance from day one. Start for $45/week. Link in bio.
