Her number is seventy seven. She did not pick it because she liked it.
Meet Evelynn Ohl, 10 years old, out of Hermitage, Pennsylvania!
She pitches and plays second base for Silver Creek Softball, and she has already been on the mound for six years. She started tee ball at three and started pitching at four, after watching college softball on TV and deciding that was the thing. In her words, I want to do this, please sign me up.
She wears 77 because that is how many days she spent in the newborn intensive care unit before she got to come home. She was born three months early and weighed two pounds. Her head, as she puts it herself, was smaller than a softball. At three and four years old she wore leg braces to build the muscle she needed to walk and run properly.
She learned to walk. Then she learned to run. Then she learned to pitch.
And that is not even the part her mom brings up first. Evelynn is 10 and she should be going into fifth grade. She is going into seventh, as an honors student. At Christmas, Thanksgiving and
Easter she and her family carry hot meals door to door to neighbors who have nobody to eat with. One
Easter it was twenty three meals.
Her advice to younger players is simple. Put 100% effort in, and keep working.
