🏐 2026 NFHS VOLLEYBALL RULE CLARIFICATION 🚨

Yes, high school teams can now designate two liberos — but there are TWO separate rules coaches and players need to know:

1️⃣ Only ONE libero can be on the court at a time.
A team may designate two liberos for a set, but L1 and L2 cannot be on the court at the same time.

2️⃣ Either libero CAN serve — but they share ONE serving position.

For example, if L1 serves for Player #3, L2 may later serve for Player #3 as well. What they cannot do is have L1 serve in one position in the serving order and L2 serve in another.

This is part of the 2026–27 NFHS volleyball rules, with the serving situation specifically addressed in the NFHS Rules Interpretations released August 6, 2026.

🏐 KNOW THE RULE: THE SETTER DOUBLE IS LEGAL?!

Yes — under NFHS rules, a player can make multiple contacts during one attempt to play the second team hit when the ball is next contacted by a teammate. And this applies to any player making the second contact, not just setters. (NFHS⁠)

🟢 LEGAL:
The setter doubles the second contact → the ball stays on her team’s side → a teammate plays it next.

🔴 FAULT:
The setter doubles the second contact → the ball crosses the plane of the net and is next contacted by the opponent. NFHS specifically instructs officials to call the multiple-contact fault in this situation.

One important distinction: this does NOT mean all doubles are legal. A multiple contact on the third team hit is still a fault.

📖 NFHS Rule 9-4-8c
This rule change originally took effect for the 2025–26 season and remains relevant for high-school volleyball.

🚨 NEW NFHS VOLLEYBALL RULE CHANGE (2026–2027)

One of the newest rule changes this season involves bench players entering the court during live play.

Beginning with the 2026–2027 season, if a non-playing teammate (bench player) enters the court while the ball is in play, the penalty is now illegal alignment, resulting in a loss of rally/point awarded to the opponent.

This change is intended to create a more consistent penalty while keeping live play safe and organized.

🏐 Coaches: It’s a great reminder to teach athletes to celebrate, communicate, and support their teammates from behind the boundary line until the rally is over.

🚨 BREAKING: 7 NEW NFHS VOLLEYBALL RULE CHANGES FOR 2026–2027 🏐

The NFHS has officially introduced 7 new rule changes for the 2026–2027 high school volleyball season.

Here’s a quick overview of what’s changed:

✅ Two Liberos are now permitted
✅ Serving Screen clarification
✅ Libero uniform bottoms updated
✅ Bench celebration props prohibited
✅ Audio & video devices prohibited in the team area
✅ Officials receive 15 additional seconds for lineup verification

We’re continuing our series covering the volleyball rules that create the most confusion for coaches, players, parents, and officials.

Today’s Rule:

When is it a center line fault?

✅ LEGAL: A player’s foot may touch the center line.

❌ ILLEGAL: A fault occurs when the entire foot completely crosses the center line onto the opponent’s court during live play.

The key isn’t your toe, your heel, or part of your shoe—it’s whether your entire foot has completely crossed the center line.

Knowing this rule can prevent unnecessary whistles and help players understand what is—and isn’t—a fault.
