Many kids will drown right in front of their parents because drowning doesn’t look like what you think it does.

Do YOU know what it looks like? It’s not what you see on TV. TV dramatizes it to keep you in suspense and make you keep watching.

This is what drowning REALLY looks like:

1) It’s SILENT. No splashes. No screams. They are trying to breathe and can’t make noises.
2) It’s FAST! It takes 20-60 seconds.
3) There is no jumping out of the water or arms flailing around. It happens almost entirely underwater.
4) Their head will be arched up, attempting to reach the surface to breathe. They may bob up and down just at the surface for a little while, and this can look like doggy paddling/playing.
5) Under the water, they are in a vertical, up and down position, and their arms and legs are cycling as if they are trying to climb a ladder.
6) They can’t move forward much, if at all….not enough to get to safety.
7) They can be right next to the wall or an exit and still not be able to reach it…and they will drown inches away from safety.
8 ) They can be in water shallow enough for them to stand in but not realize they can simply stand up, as they are in panic mode.

Learn to spot drowning. You just might save a little life!!

Shallow Water Drowning IS a thing and can kill you in just 2.5 minutes or less! This is why we stress to NEVER teach kids “games” involving holding your breath underwater it won’t end well!! Please spread this message!

Erin Watson was frozen to the spot as she watched her father-in-law pull her husband's gray, lifeless body out of the pool at the hotel where they were staying.

This summer, I was so busy! Thank you to the local YMCA for allowing me to use their facilities to give swim lessons to the community. During the months of may, June, and July, I had 10 lessons a day! Don’t forget, I still provide lessons throughout the year as well. I am on a mission to teach children and adults life saving skills. ❤️🥰❤️🥰

We have met one of our goals. Davey can kick 15 yards on his stomach and on his back with a life jacket on.

Without the life jacket, he can float on his belly, kick on his belly, push off the wall streamline, jump in and resurface, do flips in the water (YES! Flips), climb out without assistance, roll onto his back, push off the stairs and swim to me, push off the wall and swim back to the wall, and he can dive to the bottom and retrieve toys. All this in ONE SUMMER!!!!!!

He and I have been working very hard.

Waylon refuses to let me teach him, but he has learned freestyle this summer with the help of my friends and coworkers. Waylon is also less and less afraid of the water. He is doing fabulous!

I’m so proud of my boys!!

I am currently taking a break from swim lessons, however, I will be resuming in the middle of May. I am currently dealing with some health issues and need to take care of myself. I am looking forward to continuing lessons!
