Is “Exceed Agency Standards” Just a Buzzword?
I see so many instructors leading with the claim, “We exceed agency standards.” But what does that actually mean?
When you ask for specifics, the answers usually resort to doubletalk.
• Do you require more dives than the minimum?
• Do you teach additional skills?
• Do you provide deeper academic coverage?
Almost always, the answer is meaningless.

Case in point: I recently had an instructor look to do a specialty crossover. Their bio proudly claimed they "exceed agency standards." Perfect. I told them that I also exceed standards, so to complete the crossover, I’d need them in the water with me for that specialty.
The response? "But wait, I just want to do a paper crossover per the minimum standards."
Evidently, it’s a great marketing phrase until it requires actual work.

The Truth About Standards: Advertising that you "exceed standards" is like a restaurant advertising they have clean bathrooms. Standards are minimums. Anyone providing a quality service should naturally exceed them.
Let's leave the buzzwords behind and focus on real quality. (And yes... let's keep the bathrooms clean, too!) 🚽✨

👇 Instructors and Divers: What does "exceeding standards" actually look like to you in practice? Or is it time to retire the phrase? Let’s discuss below.

By request meet the Christmas Tree Worm (Spirobranchus), one of the ocean's most festive and colorful residents! As seen in the infographic,, these tube-dwelling marine creatures bore into live coral reefs for protection, leaving only their vibrant, fir-tree-shaped plumes exposed. Far from just holiday decorations, these colorful crowns act as breathing and feeding apparatuses that filter-feed on organic matter while helping to keep the water clean. Plus, they are incredibly shy—at the first sign of danger, they instantly retract into their tubes and seal the opening with a trapdoor-like operculum!

The plaintiff, DAN Risk Retention Group, Inc. ("DAN"), is suing multiple diving organizations, facilities, and individuals (the "Defendants") to obtain a binding legal declaration that it has no duty to defend or indemnify them under various insurance policies.

Safe diving isn't just about sharp technical skills—it relies heavily on proactive diving risk management to prevent incidents before they even start. As outlined in the following infographic, 70-90% of diving accidents are traditionally attributed to human error. To combat this, we have to look past simple blame and focus on the interdependent, non-technical skills that create reliable safety margins. True safety requires systematic hazard mitigation alongside critical team dynamics like situational awareness, decision-making, and open communication. By cultivating a "Just Culture" and embracing continuous learning through detailed debriefs, we can better understand how and why mistakes happen. Let's commit to moving away from safety margin erosion, cross-checking our buddies, and fostering an environment where every diver comes home safely.

San Salvador Island, Bahamas is remote diving. Deep technical diving means diving air and mixing your own deco gases. But the crystal clear water and brethtaking big walls are amazing. We did 17 dives with 4 deep air tech dives. And we will be back June 5th thru 12th 2027!
