I'm going to go with Ricky, because Ricky is the only one who can throw out Ricky. Just ask Ricky, he loves to talk about Ricky.

Who you taking?

He asks the kid straight up if that's true. Kid says yes. No hesitation.
Because it is. Getting better feels bad on the way there.
The new thing is uncomfortable and the old thing was easy. For a few sessions the kid is worse than he was — slower, stiffer, thinking too much — and everything in him wants to go back to what felt natural. Natural just means familiar. It doesn't mean good.
That's the window where most kids quit on a change, and honestly where most parents pull the plug too. It looks like it isn't working.
If your kid comes out of a session a little annoyed, that's usually not a red flag. That's the sound of something actually changing.

"I'm going to show you how to totally relax when you hit. And you're going to hate it."
He's right, they do hate it. Relaxing feels like not trying. Every kid who's been told to hustle, to want it more, to compete — being told to loosen up sounds like being told to care less.
It isn't. It's the opposite. Tight is what a body does when it's guessing. Loose is what it does when it can actually see.
Then the drill: don't move until I throw it. Sounds like nothing. Try it and watch how hard it is for a kid who's been starting early his whole life.
Twenty years for Bill to work this out. He'll hand it to your kid in an afternoon.

Ask a kid why he tightens up and he won't have an answer. Here's the answer.
He's afraid of missing the ball.
So he grips harder and braces. And a braced body stops tracking, because the eyes go quiet when everything else is clenched. Which means he misses the ball.
The fear creates the exact outcome he was afraid of. Every time. That's the loop, and almost nobody names it for him — they just tell him to relax, which is useless advice to a kid who doesn't know what he's relaxing from.
Bill says it took him twenty years to figure this out. He played at the highest level and it still took him two decades.
Your kid doesn't have to spend twenty years on it.

Blocking a ball incorrectly can lead to serious injury. Putting your hand directly in front of an incoming ball can result in a broken finger, sidelining you for weeks. Protect yourself by understanding the right technique.

He's 70 and still got it! Watch him move with incredible grace and power. You won't believe your eyes. He even scared someone with his performance!

When you get tight, you stop watching the ball. The coach emphasizes swinging faster, not getting tighter, and keeping your feet still. A humorous reminder about the only time you should be on your knees.

He used to be 250 pounds with a mullet. Now he teaches hitting line drives up the middle. Can you believe it?
