"SOMEDAY I HOPE YOU GET THE CHANCE TO LIVE LIKE YOU WERE DYING"
"I was finally the husband
That most of the time I wasn't
And I became a friend a friend would like to have
And all of a sudden going fishin'
Wasn't such an imposition
And I went three times that year I lost my dad
I finally read the Good Book, and I
Took a good, long, hard look
At what I'd do if I could do it all again."
I am sure a lot of you immediately can identify the song and artist these lyrics come from. They are powerful, really powerful to think about and basically came to life in our office this past week.
This past week we had an amazing gentleman come in and speak to our Elite Group of agents about PERSPECTIVE and HAPPINESS. And unbeknownst to a majority of them in the room he has terminal cancer and more than likely only a few months to live.
This man and his immediately recognizable partner have an amazing coaching and personal development business and we were honored to bring him in.
If you would pass him on the street, have a conversation with him, or make a passing observation of him speaking to a group of individuals I can guarantee one of these thoughts will enter your head. Man, this is one passionate and happy person. This is a guy who is thriving in all aspects of his life. This man has it all together.
Man I bet he lives the life.
And you know what, everyone of those thoughts are exactly right! He is THRIVING in spite of the disease that will ultimately take his life. He makes no excuses, he isn't angry or bitter, he isn't spending the hours and days he has left having a pity party. He is doing what he loves and living each day to the fullest.
Are you???? Am I???
Every day there are things I rush through, or things that seem like a burden at the time that I know I will miss and I know I will want back. After the meeting in the office during evening bath time with my 2.5 year old it took on a different prospective. It wasn't something I rushed through or something I viewed as a chore. It is quality time where time can slow down, I can be in the moment, and enjoy seeing the joy on her face.
As real estate agents this can be tough to do during the normal course of the day! The challenge is trying to find those moments, or having a different prospective that alters your reaction to certain events or situations.
We, as agents, by nature are competitive. We are operating in a highly stressful market, routinely dealing with tough clients and sometimes tough agents to work with during a deal, trying to balance work and life, and a million other things that add to the stress of the day. I have said it and I know many of you have as well, man I can't wait to I get to this level and everything will be great. The reality is happiness doesn't reside at the end of the journey or at reaching a certain goal. It can be found along the entire way as long as your perspective changes and you choose to find it!
My challenge to you today is take a moment, slow down, realize that happiness is not at the end of the journey or when you hit a certain production level. We are in control of our happiness and our perspective. Don't let the negative energy of others infect you, surround yourself with those who bring you up, bring out the best in you, and challenge you to be the best version of yourself.
Will end the post with the rest of the lyrics to the chorus of the song because it's not a bad thing if these words resonate with you today or stick in your head for awhile. It just might change your day or rest of the week! Then the real work begins of continuing the journey to emotional intelligence and self improvement!
He said
"I went skydiving
I went Rocky Mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull named Fumanchu
And I loved deeper
And I spoke sweeter
And I gave forgiveness I'd been denying"
And he said
"Someday I hope you get the chance
To live like you were dying"
Have a great rest of the week everyone!
