Matt Messinger - VSC Guest

Matt will be talking about my graduate work on the consequences of dam passage for silver-stage American eel during downstream migration in the Penobscot River and also outlining my plans for studying predation on Atlantic salmon smolt over the next few years. The title: "The good, the bad and the ugly for American eel and Atlantic salmon during downstream migration"

A brief bio:

Our guest Speaker- Matt is a PhD student in the Ecology and Environmental Sciences program at the University of Maine. He grew up near Duluth, Minnesota, but spent his summers in Woods Hole, MA where he evolved into an avid saltwater angler targeting scup, stripers, and fluke along the shores of Cape Cod. He finished his Master's at UMaine this winter where his research focused on American eel behavior and survival in impounded watersheds. He has since transitioned to the world of Atlantic salmon and hopes to better understand the risk of predation on salmon smolts.

Information from Rangley Region Sports Shop.

This month's fly is the Grouse and Flash. This fly was created by Nick Yardley of England. I first used it many years ago but had forgotten about it until recently seeing it in a tying book. It's hard to see the bright flash of the body in a photo but the fish have no problem seeing it. This is a great soft hackle to swing in the current during a hatch or as a search pattern.

Hook - nymph size 10 - 16
Thread - white under body and brown for the front
Body - 4 pieces of pearl krystal flash
Thorax - Hares ear dubbing
Hackle - ruffed grouse feather

Hey Everyone,

The Milford fishlift is back up and running after the scheduled maintenance shutdown. We captured 3 MSW this week at Milford plus 1 MSW at Orono adding to our total which is now 1443!

221 fish (190 MSW and 31 Grilse) have been sent to Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery for Broodstock.

Counts not been adjusted for in-season recaptures based on PIT Tag, Radio Tag, or proration. Counts will be adjusted as data become available.
