It took 31 million tests to build a pattern that can confuse Flock cameras into missing cars.

Cybersecurity researcher Bill Swearingen spent the past year training a system to generate what are known as adversarial patterns – designs that look strange but still obviously visible to people, while confusing the software used by surveillance cameras.

At Def Con in Las Vegas, he put one of those patterns on a wrapped 2009 Toyota Yaris and tested it against a Flock camera in public.

The goal was not to hide the car from the camera.

The camera could still record it.

Instead, the pattern was designed to stop the software from recognizing that it was looking at a vehicle in the first place. Swearingen said the demo worked, meaning the car was visible on video but was not properly detected by the system.

That matters because modern surveillance cameras do much more than just record footage. Many use computer vision to automatically identify cars, people, license plates, and other objects, allowing police or other users to search huge amounts of footage far more quickly.

Swearingen says his model ran roughly 31 million tests while learning which patterns worked best. He also said the designs were able to confuse 11 open-source detection algorithms, along with systems used in Flock cameras and Axon body cameras.

The result is a strange reminder that AI surveillance does not “see” the world the way humans do.

Joyful Pace running group has graciously allowed me to create a class for her running group, which I’ll be teaching tomorrow evening. I’m very grateful that they are willing to be my guinea pigs for a Restorative Hatha practice ❤️ 🏃‍♂️ 🧘‍♀️ 🙏

BIG NEWS!

Joyful Pace is collaborating with Columbia Yoga & Expressive Arts to develop a restorative hatha yoga class geared toward runners recovery, safe for all levels.

We are doing our first collab this THURSDAY, August 6, starting at 6pm.

We will move at our own preferred speeds around Northmoreland Park lake from 6-6:45, then meet at Columbia Yoga in Vandergrift for a special runners restorative yoga class!

Please respond if you are interested or coming, as space is limited for the class and we need a head count.

See you there!!!!

Thank you to everyone who made our soft opening and the first Artfest for our space a success!
