Ora Nui Tahitian Dance Troupe is a family-run dance studio founded in 2011 by Polynesian sisters, Charlie & Roxie. After moving to Vancouver from Hawai’i, Roxie saw Tahitian culture was being misrepresented, and often mistaken for Hula. With the blessings from her teachers of Tahiti-based group, Marania Haoragi, Roxie and her sister Charlie created Ora Nui to not just perpetuate and share their Ta

hitian culture with communities across the Pacific Northwest, but to do so correctly, with integrity, so as not to offend or misrepresent the rich culture of Tahiti and her sister islands in French Polynesia. Together the sisters teach ‘Ori Tahiti & Pehe classes (Tahitian dance and drumming) to girls and guys of all ages and skill levels. Tahitian, being one of the most physically challenging Polynesian dance styles, means dancers develop strength and endurance right along with poise, grace, and agility. Through dance, the sisters share the music, art, language, and culture of Tahiti as well as the solid family values they grew up on - Respect, Integrity, and ALOHA - with everyone they connect with.

Closing out AANHPI Month with a half time for the Portland Fire 🔥 WNBA team. Thank you for allowing us to share our love for our Pacific Islands heritage and cultures on such a big stage.

We were super bummed our fireknife dancers, Joseph and Napu couldn’t light up but hopefully next year it will be allowed. Mahalo to uncle Oni and uncle Mahks for pulling an all nighter making the LED sticks since we couldn’t light up. They turned out super cool and I think I need one now lol.

Help us welcome back a returning group to the Kalama Cultural Festival, Anavai O Te Ora. You’ll learn more about this Tahitian dance group's performance at the festival later on. This vendor will have a booth featuring pareu or “sarongs” for sale. Arutu Mai!!! 💪
This past Wednesday the taure’a focused on the shape and form of their tumami and faarapu. Practice after practice they show up no matter how hard the last practice was all for the love of Ori and the sisterhood they’ve cultivated with each other. Seeing how far they’ve come together, not just in dancing and socially, but also engaging more in meaningful in-depth conversations of culture, self identity, and even the problems they face as teenagers navigating the world today makes us leaders so proud of the young women they are becoming. They even make us better without even knowing it. 💕
