July 24, 1906 — Kyoto, Japan. The Butokukai Jujutsu Masters Conclave, chaired by Kodokan founder Jigoro Kano, convened to help develop a unified national set of kata for Japan’s jujutsu traditions.

Using AI restoration tools, we’ve colorized this remarkable historic image. The original black-and-white photograph appears on page 116 of The Founding of Jujutsu & Judo in America.

Twenty masters participated in this unprecedented gathering. The Kodokan held six positions — including Kano’s chairmanship — while no other ryūha had more than three representatives, and several were represented by only a single member. The composition of the conclave offers a revealing glimpse into the growing influence of the Kodokan method on the future direction of Japanese jujutsu.

At the same time, the Butokukai remained an independent institution overseeing Japan’s martial arts as a whole, rather than an organization subordinate to the Kodokan. The relationship between the two bodies was both cooperative and competitive — a fascinating dynamic explored in greater depth in The Founding of Jujutsu & Judo in America.

What sets training at a traditional dojo apart from the many commercial martial arts schools and fitness-oriented or competition-based gyms that have become so common?

At Kumayama Dojo, you are not a customer. You have an opportunity to become a member of a close-knit dojo family. There are no contracts. Training here is personal, deliberate, and rooted in authentic battlefield arts like Aiki-Kendo, Nihon Jujutsu, Judo, Aikido, and Jodo as well as Kali with direct, documented lineages back to Japan and the Philippines. Small classes mean you receive individualized instruction from experienced teachers who have devoted decades to the same traditions. We emphasize physiological principles of natural body movement to create effortless technique, rei (respect and etiquette), zanshin (continuous situational awareness and presence of mind), and the deeper principles of bushido that build discipline, focus, clarity, and character that carry over into every part of your life.

The atmosphere is serious yet relaxed and supportive, challenging, uplifting, and transformative. Progress comes through steady, mindful practice building depth, technical understanding, and long-term personal development. Undertaking and accomplishing goals is fulfilling and enjoyable. We are serious in purpose, but there are smiles and laughter as well.

After more than 35 years in the martial arts and 29 years guiding Kumayama Dojo, I’ve seen how our approach and training methodology builds skill sets, sharpens skills and senses and equips people to defend themselves and those around them.

If you’re seeking more than a workout, if you want a genuine path of self-preservation through authentic Japanese and Filipino Martial Arts, I invite you to come experience the difference for yourself.

Respectfully,
Frankie Canant II
