25 Years Later: Never Forget⚜️
On September 11, 2001, our nation experienced unimaginable loss—and witnessed extraordinary courage, compassion, and service. Twenty-five years later, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost, honor the first responders and everyday heroes who answered the call, and reflect on the countless acts of kindness that followed.
In the hours, days, and months after the attacks, Scouts across the country asked a simple question: “How can we help?” They collected bottled water, work gloves and other supplies for rescue workers, supported blood and food drives, helped families and first responders, and organized service projects in their own communities. Some Scout units near the affected areas provided supplies directly supporting recovery efforts.
One remarkable story was that of Welles Remy Crowther, a former Scout remembered as “The Man in the Red Bandanna.” Crowther repeatedly returned into the South Tower to help others escape and is credited with saving numerous lives before losing his own.
Today, a new generation of Scouts carries that spirit forward through remembrance and service. Scouting America is recognizing the 25th anniversary of 9/11 as part of its 2026 service initiative—a fitting tribute to a day that showed the world what it means to be helpful, brave, and prepared to serve others.
May we honor those we lost not only by remembering their names, but by continuing their legacy of courage, kindness, and service.
